Extract from: The Graphic (London) xiii.15 (9 April 1881) 357     ¶ A CHARMING NINETEENTH-CENTURY BEACH-SCENE taken at the southern end of Monmouth Beach in New Jersey, about ten miles south of Sandy Hook. The inset shows a group of women playing croquet on the lawn of the Sea Shore Cottage in Atlanticville (North Long Branch) nearby: This establishment had been opened three years earlier by Margaret Cook (Durbin) Harper (1830-1886), as "a Summer Resort for the young working women of New York, who are in need of rest and recreation, with but a limited time to spare and insufficient means to pay the charges at the usual resorts".
