Description:
In: Historia (Paris, 1955-  ) no. 242 (January 1967), pages 120-31     ¶ ONLY EDITION: This is the original magazine whose cover inspired the American artist Jim Dine to embark on his extraordinary series of nine Rimbaud portraits 1971-73, now very scarce and highly prized. In an interview with Thomas Krens (1976), Dine recalled that he had been "impressed by Rimbaud first as a still life. The Rimbaud series began several years ago when I found a French popular history magazine in a bookstall on the quai in Paris. The cover of the magazine had a portrait of Rimbaud, probably by some nineteenth-century academician [but in fact after Carjat 1871/2], and I was attracted by the way the face looked, physically. Seeing his face in a bookstall on the Seine--it just struck me how interested I was, how much he looked like a young boy, how amazing his face was. I then read his poems, and about his life, and that really fascinated me, but it was his face that I was… Read More

Description:
Paris: Librairie Vanier, 1886   ¶ FIRST EDITION, and in fact the only separate edition, of Verlaine's sketch of the elder Goncourt, novelist, diarist, and legendary testator whose famous will established the Prix Goncourt and gave heart to auctioneers everywhere: It is my wish, he wrote, that my drawings, my prints, my curiosities, my books--in short, these works of art which have been the delight of my life--shall not be consigned to the cold tomb of a museum and subjected to the stupid glance of the careless passerby. Instead I require that they should be dispersed under the auctioneer's hammer, so that the pleasure I have had in acquiring every one of them shall be given again, in every case, to some inheritor of my tastes.   ¶ Verlaine's essay is enlivened here by a striking full-page caricature of Goncourt in his library, listing his novels while six fat volumes of "Souvenirs" are strewn behind him: The bust over his shoulder represents his late… Read More

Description:
Paris: Librairie Vanier, 1885   ¶ FIRST EDITION, and in fact the only separate edition, of Verlaine's sketch of François Coppée; enlivened by a striking caricature of the poet holding a red rose and toting a wagonload of hearts across the Place de l'Odéon--where his comedy Le passant had given Sarah Bernhardt her first triumph.   ¶ Coppée was a leading poet and dramatist of the 1870s and '80s, and the progenitor of Les Vilains Bonshommes ("The Nasty Boys")--a group of younger Parnassians whose monthly dinners were celebrated, famously, by Fantin-Latour in his large canvas Coin de table, now in the Musée d'Orsay. (It was at one such dinner, in 1871, that Rimbaud made his Paris debut. The Nasty Boys were not amused.) Coppée is now remembered chiefly for his role in excluding Mallarmé and Verlaine and Charles Cros from the third volume of Le Parnasse contemporain 1876. (Series: Les hommes d'aujourd'hui,… Read More

Description:
Paris: Librairie Vanier, 1886   ¶ FIRST EDITION of Verlaine's biographical sketch of Barbey d'Aurevilly, novelist and critic, the author of Les diaboliques (1874) and other light classics. Verlaine's essay is enlivened here by a wonderful full-page caricature of Barbey striking an imperious pose as he jabs his palm with his own pen, perhaps a hint of his extreme Catholicism. His foppish boots sprout needlelike spurs; and the names of his books spill out from a tipped bottle of 'encre du lion'. (The latter recalls the use of the word 'lion' in French as near-synonym for the word 'dandy', eg in Baudelaire "Le peintre de la vie moderne" ix: "Que ces hommes se fassent nommer raffinés, incroyables, beaux, lions ou dandies, tous sont issus d'une même origine". For this suggestion we are indebted to Mr David Cocksey of the University of Sheffield.)  (Series: Les hommes d'aujourd'hui, no. 282.)   ¶ It was Barbey, incidentally,… Read More

Paris: Librairie Vanier, 1885   ¶ FIRST EDITION of Verlaine's autobiographical sketch for Léon Vanier's series Les hommes d'aujourd'hui (1876-99), which was sort of the Biography Channel of its day. The text is greatly enriched here by Cohl's full-page caricature of Verlaine as a scowling imp, crouching and strumming a lyre while his left hand grasps an arrow shot through a heart: The Greek word anágke ("need", "anguish", "distress") is inscribed on his forehead, and his tail--which seems a bit too low--is labelled "DÉCADENCE".
