Description:
London: Thornton Butterworth, 1932. First edition, first printing. Published by Thornton Butterworth in London, 1932. This is a very good (or better) copy. Without the rare dust wrapper. The original publisher's cloth, in an attractive weave, is toned at the spine and slightly bumped at the corners. It appears to have had small repair work to the rear hinge, showing a break in the original weave. The corners are slightly bumped and the spine tips too. The text blocks are markedly clean however, free from foxing though so lightly darkened. The titles bright and in tact with blue tooling. The bookplate of 'Richard Stanley' is pasted to the front endpaper, with 'Jordan 1990' in blue ink below it. There is a small previous inscription to the front fly, which is also foxed, as are the further preliminaries. Though lacking the dust wrapper, this is a very scarce title in very good (or better) condition. The author's second title.

Description:
Gollancz, 1940. Hardcover. Very Good. A first edition, first printing published by Gollancz in 1940. Some light spotting to end papers. Some foxing to edges which are a little dusty. Very slight wear to head and tail of spine. Cloth dull with a few blemishes. The unclipped dust wrapper (priced 7/6 net on the spine) dust marked, with some creasing and rubbing. Spine of dust wrapper tanned. Some ink marks to rear. One crease to the spine and to the top of the front panel. Initially a review of 'Tropic of Cancer' by Henry Miller, Orwell moves on to discuss Charles Dickens and 1920s to 1930s literature. The biblical story of Jonah and the whale is used as a metaphor for accepting experience without seeking to change it, Jonah inside the whale being comfortably protected from the problems of the outside world. A very rare Orwell title, with no US equivalent edition. Gollancz published 1000 copies were published of which 'several copies [were] destroyed in an air raid.' (cf. Fenwick, G.,… Read More

Description:
Heinemann, 1934. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition, first printing. Published by Heinemann in London, 1934. This is a very good (or better) copy. The supplied dust wrapper, designed by Youngman Carter being the true first issue (7/6) has some mild creasing throughout, and some moderate separation at the spine tips. The rear panel is markedly bright. Internally, there is some slight foxing to the preliminaries and also some to the latter pages. Bound in the original black cloth, with the publisher's device blind-stamped to the lower front board, with a slight ring to the front. The hinges are tight and unrestored. The author's signature is present on the front fly leaf, inscribed to 'Clive, affectionately' in black ink. The recipient Clive Francis is a British actor, known for his roles in Stanley Kubrick's 'Clockwork Orange', 'Inspector Clouseau' and 'The Crown' and was a friend of Greene's. Provenance: Christie's, Nov. 1994. Though at first it… Read More

Description:
London: Hamish Hamilton, 1945. First edition, first printing. Published by Hamish Hamilton in London, 1945. This is a very good (or better) copy. The dust wrapper, illustrated by Roger Furse, has some slight nicks present. There are hairline creases to the top and tail edges of both panels. It has not been price clipped, showing the appropriate '8s. 6d. net' price in accordance with the first issue. The boards are bright and firm in the original publisher's cloth. The gilt titling is clean and bright. Due to poor wartime paper stock, the text blocks are foxed and slightly toned. This copy is free from previous owner's ink and is, overall, a very good (or better) copy. Mitford's breakthrough novel and the first in her iconic trilogy, preceding 'Love in a Cold Climate' (1949) and 'Don't Tell Alfred' (1960). It is about an upper-class English family in the interwar period focusing on the romantic life of Linda Radlett, as narrated by her cousin, Fanny Logan.… Read More

Description:
LONDON: Gollancz, 1938. First edition, first printing. Published by Gollancz in London, 1938. A very good book with a small name and date to the front endpaper. Some fading to the gilt titles. Spotting to the page edges and top edge. Some rubbing to the corners and edges. In a very good dust wrapper, which has a minute chip to the head of the spine. The spine is browned (as is usual). Some light loss to corners. A very nice example of the wrapper indeed. The ALS, written in Du Maurier's hand is on 'Greyfriars, Church Crookham, Fleet, Hants.' headed and watermarked paper. Written in blue ink, it is inscribed "Dear Sir [...] It is a great encouragement to know that 'Renecca' appears to serious readers, beside the ordinary novel-reading public who read for excitement. Thank you indeed for writing. Yours sincerely, Daphne du Maurier". It is a stunning signature, with her hand bold and fluid throughout. The ink intensifies on the rear side, presumably due to her running out… Read More
