Small 8vo, 151 x 100 mms., foliated [1] 2 - 163 [5 verso colophone with triangular emblem with lillies], with engraved vignette on title-page, with Giglio's "gigli" (lillies) enclosed in an oval with three lilies above a pyramid figure, final blank leaf with contemporary note on recto, contemporary vellum(worn and soiled, with pieces missing from spine. This first part of a two-volume enterprise was translated by A. Massa and G. Tarcagnotta.

Hawick : Printed and Sold by R. Armstrong..., 1811. FIRST EDITION. 12mo, 178 x 92 mms., pp. [ii], 276, engraved portrait of Allan Ramsay as frontispiece, newly recased in boards, with paper label on spine; first five leaves slightly wormed at upper right margin, text a little browned. Euphrosyne is the goddess of good cheer, joy, and mirth, so this is a respectable anthology of amusing and cheerful poems and songs; they are predominately Scottish in origin. Was haggis served at Euphrosyne's banquet?

FIRST EDITION. 12mo (in 6s), pp. xvi, 203 [204 adverts], H2 signed H3, H3 signed H5, engraved title-page with vignette of Fielding, later 18th century quarter sheepskin (worn and rubbed), marbled boards (detached), with the inscription in an 18th century hand "Ex D. Kilner" on the front paste-down end-paper and "Sarah Woodward [?Genson]/ Sept. '64 " [i. e., 1864], on the recto of the front free end-paper, with a pencil drawing of "arms of S. W. G." below the name. D. Kilner is possibly the children's writer, Dorothy Kilner (1755 - 1836). Kearsley published three editions of this work, as well as other "Beauties" with similar title-pages, and the only change seems to be in the title-page. An edition was published in Dublin in 1783.

Howard compiled many of these volumes, published a series, The Beauties of Literature, Consisting of Classic Selections from the Most Eminent British and Foreign Authors, c. 1830 - 1840, consisting of at least 15 volumes.

Bates, 1794. 8vo, 210 x 12o mms., pp. [iii] iv - ix [x blank, xi Contents] xii - xviii, 316, including half-title, early 19th century half plum sheepskin, marbled boards, gilt spine; collating [pi]2 b8 B-U8x6, but lacking two unsigned leaves with three pages of subscribers, binding a little worn, but a very good copy with the contemporary name "John Cranston" on the top margin of the title-page, and the later, probably 20th century, inscription on the recto of the font free end-paper, "Anthony F [?Warren[/ Belygal/ Cl[illegible]." ESTC T189225 locates copies in Belfast Central Library, TCD, National Library of Ireland; Toronto. OCLC adds Cork, Indiana, Sydney. ESTC T224564 (BL only), with an imprint for William Gilbert, appears to be the same sheets with a different title-page.

Stockton: Printed and Sold by R. Christopher. 1783. FIRST EDITION. 12mo, 175 x 98 mms., pp. xii, [13] - 300, including half-title, later full calf, spine blocked in gilt; ex-library, Winchester Public Library, "Withdrawn," two library labels before half-title, library stamp on verso of title-page, and small circular library stamp on top margin of page [13]. The concept of "beauties" as applied to extracts from poetry and prose suitable to be anthologized for the moral benefit of youth or the entertainment of adults seems to be one that began to be popular in the mid 18th century in Britain. In the Preface the compiler asks why another anthology is needed when there are so many on the market, answering that "there cannot be too many books adapted to purposes so laudable; and it is evident from the dictates of reason and nature, that the Youthful Mind is fond of novelty." Porteus (1731 - 1808) published a large number of theological works. but the main thrust of these excerpts from his writings is towards evangelical Christianity.

Information about the identity of Thomas Janes (1745 - 1775) is rather thin on the ground. He seems to have been well-regarded in Bristol to judge from a publication entitled, An Elegy on the Death of the Rev. Hall (1800 - 1889) was probably one of the busiest and most industrious authors, compilers, and editors of the 19th century. Peter Mandler in ODNB concludes his entry on Hall, with this observation: "And yet his life as a whole stands as a model of Victorian energy and uprightness, and his work as editor and animateur did much to popularize art and literature and thus to support the mass market for high culture so characteristic of the middle third of the nineteenth century." [III] - X, 360 [361 Errata, 362 blank], contemporary sheepskin, leather label, lacks prelims and thus either blank leaf or half-title before title-page, text fingered and soiled, but a goodish copy with many of the errata corrected and the initials "D. D." on the top margin of the title-page. Both ESTC listings assert "This work was in fact not written or compiled by George Alexander Stevens (DNB)." Jeames Sambrook in his ODNB entry doesn't mention the work. Gerald Kahan in his 2008 book, George Alexander Stevens and the Lecture on Heads noted that while Stevens was travelling the country giving his lecture on heads, "He played at Whitehaven and while there spoke with a Mr. Dunn, who wished to publish some of Stevens's songs. Ruddiman (1719 - 1781) has indeed chosen a number of recondite literary pieces for inclusion in this eclectic but very interesting anthology. Unfortunately he doesn't always identify the authors, but the volume includes Rodondo; Or the State Jugglers by Hugh Dalrymple; The Art of Politics by James Bramston; The Art of Cookery by William King; The Art of Dancing by Soame Jenyns (identified as S. J.), etc.

Small 8vo (in 4s), 160 x 92 mms., pp. [iv], 184, contemporary lightly mottled calf, spine richly gilt (but rubbed), red morocco label; slight wear to joints, but a very good copy. The first edition of 1785, of which I have not been able to find a copy, attracted a review in The London Review, beginning, "This little publication does more honour to the authors' heart than head. His sentiments in general are just, and his motives for communicting them laudable; but the dress in which he has cloathed them, is aukward and ill chosen. His observations on religion are trite, and only a repetition of what has frequently been said by others in a much more pleasing manner." Samuel Birch (1757–1841) began his life as a pastry cook, but later, in 1814, was Lord Mayor of London, ESTC T45406 locates copies of this second edition in BL, Bodleian, and Leeds only, but OCLC lists other copies, many of which seem to be online only.… Read More

Edinburgh: Printed by George Ramsay and Company, for John Fairbairn (Successor to Mr Creech), 1815. 8vo, pp. [xl], 372, 4 pages adverts at end, engraved portrait of Creech as frontispiece, contemporary half calf, gilt spine, red morocco label, marbled boards; joints cracked, spine rubbed and starting to split on lower portion. Creech (1745 - 1815) published this first in 1791 under the pseudonym Theophrastus, and this expanded version includes new essays.

FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 8vo,, 160 x 96 mms., pp. [v] vi - xi [xii blank], [9] 10 - 188, including half-title, engraved portrait (by J. Shurry after J. Palmen) as frontispiece, last two leaves printed as doubleton, contemporary half red morocco, gray boards, silver label on spine. A very good to fine copy, with ms. corrections which might be in Carrington's hand; the ones on pages 18 - 21 annotating Byron, are those stanzas 178 to 184 of Childe Harold's Pilgrimage and appear to be reversing printer's errors rather than being authorial substantive variants. How's this for a diffident opening to a preface: "The author of this Volume, has not much to say on this occasion." Small 8vo, 149 x 96 mms., pp. [xii], 387 [388 colophon], vignette on title-page, finely bound in full soft-grain red morocco, gilt lozenge on front cover, gilt spine, gilt dentelles, all edges gilt. A fine copy, with this inscription on the recto of the front free end-paper, "To D. E. Nicholson/ With every good wish/ from/ M. Dobson./ 201//11/13." Francis Turner Palgrave (1824 - 1897) published his Golden Treasury in 1861, and it has never been out of print - or at least not for long. I can't vouch for the textual history of this printing, but there were a number of revisions and redactions over the years, many of which have attracted useful bibliographical attention.

Dublin: Printed by and for James Hoey..., 1754. FIRST DUBLIN EDITION. 12mo, 168 x 96 mms., pp. [x] 9 - 176, with additional sectional title at page 85, as above, contemporary calf, neatly rebacked, with red leather label; annotations in pencil on verso of leaf before title-page, names on front paste-down end-paper and title-page marked out, short tear in fore-margin of L3, natural flaw in fore-margin of N4 with loss of two or three letters, but a very good copy. Christopher Smart (1722 - 1771) was at the time of the publication of this work was one of the stable of writers maintained by the publisher John Newbery, whose step-daughter Smart married. He had also made a contract about this time with another publisher, Thomas Gardner, to be a contributor to a monthly. How this work came to be printed in Dublin when Smart was dependent on London publishers is probably known to someone, but not, alas, to me. Banks, San Francisco, May 21 1876 on the title-page, and the bookplate of the Ferniehield Library on the front paste-down end-paper; spine worn with joints slightly cracked, newspaper clippings removed from front free end-paper. This is not, of course, the original edition, but a 19th century facsimile; a watermark - "Michallet" is distinguishable in the lower margins of B3, C3, and D4; vertical chains are also visible, but the book is unlikely to have been printed on laid paper. This is possibly the facsimile printed by John Camden Hotten in 1862.
