Small 8vo, 135 x 95 mms., pp. lxxx, 130, folding engraved map of Sicily, outlined in colour at end of text, engraved portrait of Ferdinand 1 as frontispiece, handsomely bound in contemporary straight-grain red morocco, gilt roll border on covers, spine richly gilt, all edges gilt, with the gilt arms of the Duchess du Berry on each cover; some slight rubbing of front joint, but a very good to fine copy. In the text, reference to "Duchessa di Barry" on page LX, and her own birth and marriage are recorded on page 5. Presso Giovanni Elsevier. 1656. 12mo, 128 x 73 mms., pp. [xxii], 84, contemporary or slightly later embroidered binding, with crowns in silver threads against a dark brown background, all edges gilt, with the late 17th or early 18th century bookplate of Charles-Louis Texier, comte d'Hautefeuille or possibly his father, Jacques Etienne Louis Texier, comte d'Hautefeuille on the front paste-down end-paper; no free end-papers, slight worming of lower front cover of binding, remnants of ties, but in general in very good shape for an embroidered binding. Tasso (1544 - 1595) composed Aminta in 1573 for a garden party at the court of Ferrara. "The play has a pastoral theme, and is set in the time of Alexander the Great. The characters are shepherds and nymphs. The story is about Aminta's love for the beautiful nymph Silvia, who does not return his attentions and prefers hunting. She risks rape at the hands of a Satyr but Aminta saves her; however, again she flees from him.… Read More

London: William Pickering, 1852. 12mo, 168 x 106 mms., pp. viii, 148 [149 advert, 150 - 152 blank], bound by Barritt in black goatskin over bevelled boards, the covers with raised compartments, tooled in blind with gilt roundels, spine in seven compartments, tooled in blind crosses with a central gilt roundel, gilt dentelles, all edges gauffered in gilt, with a brass clasp. Some very slight wear to binding, but a very good to fine copy. A Manual of Prayers for the Use of the Scholars of Winchester Colledge, published in 1674 was attributed to Thomas Ken (1637 - 1711), Bishop of Bath and Wells and nonjuror. ODNB doesn't give a date for Practice of Divine Love, but his Exposition on the Church-Catechism, or the Practice of Divine Love was published in 1685. Maire, 1633. 32mo (in 8s), 84 x 43 mms., pp. 256, including engraved title-page with image of Boethius, later 18th century maroon morocco, ornately gilt borders on covers, repeated on both inside boards surrounding a rectangular blank, gilt spine with decorated gilt scroll, all edges gilt. A fine and attractive copy. De Consolatione Philosophiae was written, as every schoolchild knows, while Boethius (c. 480 - 524) was in prison awaiting trial for treason, of which he was convicted and rather brutally executed. The work alternates between verse and prose, with Boethius speaking his own person in prose, and philosophy answering in verse. Inscribed on the recto of the leaf preceding the title-page, "To Charles Gleadhall from Walter Fawkes Edwards, 3rd August 1833." The Charles Gleadhall (also spelled Gleadall) of the inscription, the person to whom this Curtius was presented, was a solicitor in Halifax, Yorkshire, who lived some of his life in South Kirkby (which has also been spelled -- or misspelled -- South Kirby) in Yorkshire. The jurist, minister, and scholar Johannes Arnoldi Corvinus (1582 - 1650) was also professor of jurisprudence at Amsterdam. Here, his subject is Roman law.

A fine set, though I think the text has probably been washed. The first printing of this collection of erotic and satiric verse that I have located is dated 1613 [1623], it was republished several times in the 17th and 18th centuries and well into the 19th century. The main author was Nicolas Vauquelin, seigneur des Yveteaux (1567 - 1649), and a large number of authors made contributions.
