Essays (most of them published previously) on the biblical and Jewish aspects of Schoenberg's work and public activities. Ch. 7 (pp. 116-149), "Unity and Strength: The Politics of Jewish Survival, " summarizes Schoenberg's involvement in Jewish policy in reaction to the Nazi rise to power. From 1933, he conceived and supported projects for the gradual emigration of the Jews from Germany. In his "Four-Point Program, " completed in 1938 after his emigration to the U.S., Schoenberg pleaded for the creation of a United Jewish Party to fight for emigration and for an independent Jewish state. The struggle against antisemitism and the Jewish anti-Nazi boycott he considered inadequate and a waste…

Moscow: Foreign Languages Publishing House, nd. Hardbound. Text block very clean and tight; some sunning to covers and general wear to dj but still nice and intact. Pale green cloth with illustration of a piano in typical retro style; black matte dj with white illustration and lettering; 334 pp. with bw illustrations throughout. Translated from the Russian by Rose Prokofiev. The compiler's preface states that the material used for this volume was made available by the State Music Publishers in Moscow in 1956, so this, presumably, is the 1959 edition. A very in-depth look at Prokofiev's life and musical thought, albeit under the watchful eye of the Soviet publishers of that time, with material provided by the state-run music publishing house. It would be interesting to compare this volume with a more current, "unencumbered" one. Still a very good book with many photographs of the composer and colleagues in the music field.
