Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1996. Inscribed - First. Hardcover. VG+/VG+. Black cloth boards with gilt titling on spine, black and red DJ; [xv] 270 pp.; 55 bw figures and a map. Nicely inscribed by the author to former Russian art curator. From the dust jacket: Arts and Crafts in Late Imperial Russia is the first account of the revival of Russia's Kustar art industries from their origins in the populist debates and philanthropic impulses of the early 1870s to their climax in 1913, with the display of their achievements at the Second All-Russian Kustar Exhibition in St Petersburg. This study uncovers the complex motivations that lead a broad cross-section of educated Russian society to devote their money, energy, and artistic skills to save Kustar arts and crafts from extinction by adapting them to satisfy the tastes of a new, well-to-do urban consumer. Focusing on the four major centers of Kustar art production, it also examines the role of the professional artist in the creative life of…

Description:
NY: Viking Press, 1979. Hardcover. VG/VG-, dj slightly worn along edges. Green cloth/color dj. 160 pp. over 100 color plates, over 80 bw plates. Think Faberge, and what comes to mind are images of fabulous, glittering jewelry, the mystery and allure of Europe's great royal courts and, of course, the magnificent Imperial Easter Eggs made for the Russian Tsars. Carl Faberge was, first and foremost, a goldsmith, and the exquisite objects that came out of the Faberge workshop at its peak represent the ultimate refinement of the goldsmith's art. Each piece was designed with the express purpose of bringing joy to its recipient. Accomplishments of the Faberge workshop were not limited to precious metals and lapidary work. Their enameling techniques consistently attained a subtlety and brilliance of technique that had rarely been matched elsewhere - the work glows with richly colored enamels used with unrivaled virtuosity.

A wonderful book showing the colorful, whimsical Dymkovo folk figurines in clay. The work of Dymkovo craftsmen goes back to ancient times. But the written history of Dymkovo toys, as it is gradually revealed to us in reliable eyewitness accounts, covers only the last century and a half. The tradition of the earthenware toys survived better in the 20th century than the traditions of other hand-made Russian toys. The Dymkovo settlement near the city of Kirov (formerly known as Vyatka) is the best-known center of earthenware toy production. The settlement is established in the 15th century by the citizens the Northern town of Veliky Ustyug who rebelled against Moscow domination and…
