Osprey's study of Operation Mercury, the German airborne assault on the island of Crete in May 1941 during World War II (1939-1945), which was the first strategic use of airborne forces in history. The assault began on 20 May, with landings near the island's key airports, and reinforcements the next day allowed the German forces to capture one end of the runway at Maleme. By 24 May, the Germans were being reinforced by air on a huge scale and on 1 June Crete surrendered. This book describes how desperately close the battle had been and explains how German losses so shocked the Führer that he never again authorised a major airborne operation.

(from the preface) ...... While it claims no direct bearing upon the serious problems of existence in these strenuous times, this book is offered without apology; for concerning war directly and indirectly there is literature without end, and it has been virtuously assumed by many of us that the finer and quieter things of life must be too much neglected. The spirit of destruction is rampant, and is eating its way into our lives whether we will it or no. Our best energies are spent in the creation of huge and elaborate mechanisms for the sole purpose of destroying and of being destroyed.

Description:
Pages are clear and readable and are in excellent condition although there are some spots on the page ends. There is minor wear on the covers and the spine.

They were the best of enemies dedicated, skilled and deadly. In the night skies above wartime Germany an RAF navigator-bomber from New Zealand and a Luftwaffe pilot seek out their targets, testing the gap between success and their own destruction as they cross each others paths. The odds are heavily against either of them making it through the war, but as this sobering realisation displaces their initial exuberant adventurism, both come to see in their youthful sacrifice the survival of all they hold dear. Under a Bombers Moon reaches across the divide of years, of geography, of nationality to tell their story largely in their own words describing both the breathtaking clashes in the air and the camaraderie, humour, patriotism and personal tragedies that became their war. Description:
VERY RARE HARDCOVER - Could be mistaken for BRAND NEW (minor wear on the dust jacket). The weapons, presented in this volume, pertain to the slightly known and almost unstudied group, marked by the features of the complicated fate that befell the lands where they originated. In the last millennium B.C. the present-day territory of Bulgaria was inhabited by people known under the generalized name Thracians who, as the 'father of history' Herodotus pointed out, were the most numerous after those of India. The Thracians created a distinctive culture, which bore 'bestial style' features specific of the Scythian peoples, above all characterized by images of fantastic animals. Skillful metallurgists the Thracians left behind them first-class bronze weaponry: spears, swords, armour and decorated umbones. Weapons in the Bulgarian lands have a well marked specificity in decorative respects and partly in technical ones. The weapons, which are presented in this book and which are to be found in the collections of… Read More
