Leather worn and rubbed, surface layer starting to lift at bottom front corner with small triangular piece missing, and with hinges cracked but holding firmly. Prev owners names in ink on front free endpaper (xx'd out but including Daniel Maddux Jun; John Campbell), adhesive remnants on front pastedown (probably from early bookplate), childish drawing and scrawl in pencil on blank preceeding first page of text and again on rear pastedown, column of figures also in pencil on rear free endpaper. Light toning to preliminaries. Very lightly rubbed at edges and spine. The 18th century bookplate of A Walker, Newry laid down the portrait recto. Light toning to preliminaries. Beautifully figured tree calf. This volume contains the poet's epistles, irregular odes, pindarick odes, pastorals, elegies, songs, prologues, epilogues, miscellanies, imitations, translations, etc, etc, etc. William Congreve (1670 - 1729) was an English playwright and poet. The lower page edges of the portrait, engraved title and title page are slightly ragged. Contemporary tree calf bordered in gilt with gilt decoration to spine, maroon and black title labels rubbed (titles barely legible), gilt number 69 on the spine; marbled endpapers. Light toning to preliminaries. Very lightly rubbed at edges and spine. Beautifully figured tree calf. This volume contains the poet's The Dispensary, Claremont, epistles, prologues, translations, imitations, etc, etc, etc. Sir Samuel Garth (1661 - 1719) was an English physician and poet.
