First Edition. 18mo. no date [1759] pp. iv, 291, [1]; engraved frontispiece (by Boyce after Boitard), engraved title page and seven plates. Contemporary full sheep binding, good with some rubbing, a little chipped to head/tail fo the spine and corners, superficial cracks to spine/joints but remains firmly bound. Contents clean and tight, blank front free end paper not present, no inscriptions. A very good complete copy. [Referenced by ESTC T017526; Roscoe, J1 (1)].

London: Printed for J. Walker, 1788. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition. 12mo. A very good four volume set in contemporary, full tree calf binding with double lettering pieces in red and green. Complete pp. [iii]-vii, [1] 222; [2], 206; [2], 238 & [2], 198. No half-titles which may or may not be wanting, but the pagination for the prelims to vol. I might suggest that one is required? Very good bindings with a little rubbing, a couple of volumes slightly chipped to the head/tail of the spines, corners lightly bruised. Contents clean and tight, manuscript (Greek?) initials to title pages dated 1788 otherwise unmarked, no foxing, paper crisp. A very good set. A Rare Eighteenth Century Novel. We have managed to located just one other copy at auction in the last thirty years and that at Sotheby's sale of July 21, 1993, where it made £1,000 on the hammer, though seemingly not such a nice copy. Contemporary half polished calf binding with marbled paper covered boards, four raised bands to the spine, red title and and brown vol. no. labels, extensive gilt decoration to spines. Bindings very good with a little general wear and a little rubbing, a little wear to the heads of the joints, a little chipped to the head of the spine of vol. I. Contents clean and tight, small contemporary gift inscription dated 1845. A very good tight set in handsome contemporary bindings. Please see images..

Engraved vignette to title page, and a further 5 vignettes in text, several engraved tail pieces, musical annotation in text. Contemporary full polished calf binding, poor with cracking and chipping to the spine, joints cracked and rear board almost completely detached; ideally in need of rebinding. Original marbled paper end papers with armorial bookplate. Contents clean and tight, paper strengthening to the verso of the title page at gutter, paper clean with no foxing, complete. But for the binding a very good copy..

Third Edition. 8vo. two parts bound in one volume, both with separate title page and frontispiece plates, the second work is dated 1716 to the title page and is the first edition, whereas the first work is dated 1715 and stated the third edition; pp. [10], 52, [18], 115, [1]; two frontispiece plates and three folding plates (one with a short professionally repaired tear]. First Edition. 4to (17 x 20cm). pp.[14], 496 [8] inc. front and rear blanks, each sermon with separate dated title page. Contemporary dark, plain full calf binding, good with some general wear and rubbing, slightly chipped to tail of spine with short crack to tail of the front joint. Contents clean and tight, contemporary inscription to the rear blank, a few pages very lightly creased, generous margins to all leaves. A very good copy. Provenance: from Newton Surmaville in Somerset. This house was originally bought by Robert Harbin, a mercer of Blandford in 1608 from Joseph Compton. Robert Harbin rebuilt the house, completed in 1612. The house had remained in the family until 2006 when the last member of the family Sophia Wyndham died aged 97. The contents of the house were sold in 2007, including the library which had remained untouched for hundreds of years. Scarce..

Binding good and strong with some general wear and rubbing, leather chipped to the head/tail of the spine and rubbed through to the boards to the bottom edges, partially to the front fore-edge and the corners, joints with partial cracks at the head/tail but the binding remains firm and the boards strongly attached. Contemporary full plain sheep binding, good with some general wear and rubbing to extremities, leather to joints cracked but both boards remain firmly attached, leather a little chipped to corners and spine ends. Contents clean and tight, attractive and neat contemporary inscription to the front free end paper, "George Alcock, His Book Feb 3. 1732" Title page and text are clean with good margins, very slight water staining to last few pages. A good to very good copy..

Two pages of publisher's adverts to the rear. Original hardback binding, front board only, paper covered board with significant remains of original printed paper adhered to board, roan leather to the spine with gilt, now craked in several places and areas missing. This item requires rebinding or to be placed in a solander box since it is now held only by the cords in several parts. Contents clean and tight, minimal marking, paper bright with no foxing, neat ink signature to the top of the front free endpaper. A very good copy of this rare collection of tales. (Bibliographic reference Osbourne Collection TPL page 595) It is interesting to note that Copac lists 2 both with only 20 plates, auction records are scarce for this title with only two in the last ten years..

Collection of ten literary biographies [see below], beautifully bound in an elegant and refined "arts and crafts" style; contemporary three-quarter green morocco, gilt-decorated spines including floral motifs highlighted in red. Top edges gilt, other edges uncut; green and gold marbled end papers. Richly illustrated with hand-coloured frontispiece plates in each volume and, throughout the set, a further 75 b/w plates with captioned tissue-guards. Contemporary full polished calf binding with 5 raised bands to the spine, later title label. Good with some general wear and rubbing, joints partially cracked but still holding very firmly, leather chipped to head/tail of the spine and bottom corners. Contents good and tight, inscribed RFC to the title page which is also a little age soiled, small contemporary bookplate of Cary (This is the Cary family of the Channel Islands and the bookplate bears their motto "sine macula" i.e. without blemish and depicts "a swan argent, wings endorsed"); paper toned with slight foxing.
