Publisher's green cloth (also found in red), titled in gilt to spine, a little rubbed and scuffed to extremities, a trifle duty here and there, but a strong, solid copy. A very good example. 292pp. Internally clean. Bookplate of Sir Willliam Louis Primrose, Baronet, to front flyleaf, along with a discreet private library label to pastedown. Foreword by Dennis Wheatley; shabby chic éminence grise of London society occult, Black Mass on a Tuesday, genteel orgy at the Dorchester Thursday night. A history of the dark arts, including alchemy, necromancy, witchcraft and all points in between, from the pen of the man who taught Wheatley yoga, guided Crowley through the minefield of London flat rentals, and generally tap danced with skill and resourcefulness all the way from Guyana to the louche drawing rooms of London's occult aristocracy, all brandy, boredom, and Beelzebub.

In the original dustwrapper, generally rubbed but complete; Very Good. Scarce vanity-published adventure novel concerning the search for the Bronze Serpent of the Old Testament, pitting an idealistic rabbi against a self-promoting millionaire. The novel is rich in Masonic allusion, the Brazen Serpent being the emblem of the Masonic twenty-fifth degree. The author, a medical doctor from Marion County, West Virginia, published regularly in the New York Masonic Outlook under the pseudonym "C. Macaulay.

Minor rubbing and wear; front hinge slightly pulled, but holding; mild ageing to contents; still Very Good or better in a spectacular and well-preserved 19th-c. American publisher's binding. Pencil ownership signature ("E. Longshore") at head of title page; two brief obituaries laid down inside front cover. Full first year of the first official organ of Odd Fellowship in the U.S., edited by the society's foremost public figure of the period, James L. Ridgely. An uncommon publication, not in Mott; OCLC notes fewer than ten physical locations.

Bruxelles: Imprimerie et Librairie de Ve. Wouters, 1850. First Belgian Edition. 12mo (ca. 19cm.); publisher's blue wrappers printed within typographically decorative border; 160pp. Light chipping and wear to jacket extremities, spine a bit toned, else Very Good and fresh overall. Memoirs of the French police informant whose activities were discovered during the February Revolution of 1848. The author grew up a street urchin in Paris and was himself involved in several Republican uprisings, in 1832, 1834, and 1839. Sometime in the mid-1830's he joined the army but fled back to Paris and worked as a shoemaker. This memoir, which was first published in the same year in Paris, claims that he became a "mouchard" (police informant) when he was threatened with arrest for desertion.

A very good copy indeed. 256pp. Internally clean, although there is some odd, pale discolouration to the flyleaves that doesn't intrude anywhere else in the book. Top edge stained pink. An interesting and diverse account of the histories and activities of various hermetic societies, extant or otherwise, including the Assassins, the Rosicrucians, Tongs, Mithraic cults, the Carbonari, and a number of others.
