Description:
Cleveland: World Publishing, 1967. First Edition. First Printing. 4to. 26cm x 19cm. Publisher's brown linen effect paper covered boards. Dustjacket. Titled in gilt to spine, minor edgewear, in a clean and strong photographic dustjacket, with some light wear to the spine ends, and a small triangle crease to the lower front corner. A very good copy. 120pp. Internally clean. A rather gruelling, few punches pulled, account of a 24 hour S&D mission with India Company, 3rd battalion, 1st marines, in and around the village of Tha Binh on the 13th February 1967. The "13/13" of the title refers to 13 men wounded or killed on the 13th. There's an introduction by Chet Huntley, the NBC anchor whose "Brinkley-Huntley Report" was required watching during the conflict. As a 1967 photographic essay "13/13" is a surprisingly gritty piece of war journalism, it doesn't shy away from brutality and cruelty on the part of US troops, and it goes a fair way to giving those actions context rather than excusing them, and… Read More

Description:
Newark: Abas Magazine, 1969. First Edition. Three issues. Tabloid; on newsprint; each issue 12pp. Horizontal mailing folds (as issued); mailing labels to front pages; text slightly toned - Good or better, and complete. Scarce, short-lived underground paper produced by a Newark, New Jersey high-school collective. Masthead of no. 7 suggests that it is the first issue to be produced by offset in tabloid format; earlier issues were (apparently) mimeographed and sold only by mail. The masthead indicates that Abas was the successor publication to a high-school underground mimeo sheet named Column,"suggesting that the paper's editor(s) were either still in or just out of high school when these issues of Abas were produced. Heavy on free UPI syndicated material; the original writing at a suitably low level to support the high school thesis. The paper appears (per OCLC) to have ceased publication after ten issues. Institutional holdings are scattered and meagre; none others in commerce (2013).

Boston: Beacon Press, 1972. First Revised Edition. 4to. 28cm x 22cm. Publisher's red pictorial card covers. Minor creasing and soiling, most visibly to the lower corner of the front cover, price discreetly excised with a hole punch to the upper front corner. Clean and sharp, a very good copy. 289pp. Internally clean. A very highly detailed and in-depth assessment of the resources, manpower, and costs in play during the air war component of the war in Vietnam with a particular focus upon the intangible nature of that conflict to the average American. An air war is distant and notionally inaccessible to the general public, is the general argument of the work, which was compiled initially in a smaller report in November 1971, then expanded upon by the Anti-War Study group at Cornell University and a wider body of contributors including Rapahel Littauer, Saha Amarasingham, Chandler Morse, Norman Uphoff, and Carl Sagan, amongst a number of others assessing the impact upon economies, ecologies, diverse… Read More

Some rubbing and scuffing, small tear to head of spine, a strong, solid copy. 72pp. Internally clean, ink ownership to front flyleaf, illustrated throghout with black and white photgraphs by Joe Gooden. A photographic essay detailing the often dangerous work of the World Vision Organisation in Vietnam during the war. Mainly a Christian organisation with an interest in discipleship, World Vision also embarked upon agricultural efforts, medical care projects and other humanitarian efforts aimed at alleviating the suffering of Vietnamese civilians. It was dangerous work, and the death and imprisonment of aid workers and missionary staff was not an uncommon occurence.

Titled and decorated in gilt to spine and front board, light edgewear and some minor sunning to the spine ends, in a clean, bright, and strong dustjacket with a little corresponding fraying to the head and tail of the spne. A very good, clean copy. 445pp. Internally clean. Ostensibly one of a legion of novels that deal with a green young officer finding out he has virtually no margin for error, this is one of the distinguished few novels of the era that is approved of by veterans, and is widely considered to be one of the very best and most authentic pieces of Vietnam fiction. The authenticity comes as less of surprise when it's considered that Huggett fought with the 3rd Marine Div. in 1968-1969, and later as a Pacification Advisor in the never ending struggle to win hearts and minds. Titled in gilt and silver gilt to spine and front board, clean and bright, in a striking red and yellow dustjacket with very slight wear, a very good copy indeed. 211pp. Internally clean. Fore-edge untrimmed. A compelling New Journalistic reconstruction of the events of a spring day in 1972 in Missouri, where a group of local businessmen went to war with the local undesirables; a group of disillusioned Vietnam veterans planning an anti war parade, the ensuing violence resulted in the deaths of four people. Eszterhas is now better known for being the screenwriter for a slew of 1980's thrillers like "Jagged Edge" and "Basic Instinct", but in the early 1970's he was one of the noted voices of New Journalism, the flowing, narrative, gonzo barrage of informative lyricism that in many ways shaped our understanding of the late 60's and early 70's, most notably in the shape of people like Hunter S.
