Issued in paperbound form, but this copy nicely re-bound in hardcover with patterned green paper and leather spine label. Original wraps bound in. Author signature in purple ink on the copyright page, but it appears to be a facsimile or stamp. Good condition. Modest external wear. Text pages browned, but not brittle. Sound, tight binding. A solid, attractive copy of this useful bibliography.

An illustrated book on the art and craft treasures of the historic city of Braunschweig, Germany. 104 pp. German text with 43 photographs in b&w. Quarto hardcover in dust jacket. 10 by 7.75 inches. VG with moderate wear. Sound, tight binding. With calligraphy inscription in German to the US ambassador on his visit in November 1956. Not personalized but the recipient was James Bryant Conant, a former Harvard president who was ambassador to West Germany from 1955-1957 in the early Cold War era. Inscription roughly translates: To His Excellency the Ambassador of the United States in greeting on the occasion of the visit. Signed by Otto Benneman, then the mayor of Braunschweig, and Dr. Erich Walter Lotz, the city manager. Round ink stamp of Stadt Braunschweig. (Found in New England with other books from the personal library of James Bryant Conant, 1893-1978.)

Includes Donna Harraway's important essay, "A Cyborg Manifesto: Science, Technology, and Socialist-Feminism in the Late Twentieth Century." Also includes work by Samuel R. Delany and Jessica Amanda Salmonson. Illustrated by 16 pages of photographs and artwork. Signed on the copyright page by Takayuki Tatsumi, who contributed two essays as the epilogue and prologue. A typed letter with handwritten, signed personal note is also laid in. Taken in the 1920s by German travel photographer Kurt Hielscher (1881-1948.) Printed in sepia tone and captioned in the lower margins. (Some captions in German only, but others with translations in English, French, Spanish, and Italian.) xiii, (1) + the 304 pages of photos. Index of names and places. Brief introduction by Hielscher in German, a b&w map of Germany, and a facsimile of a handwritten letter by German painter Hans Thoma before his death in 1924. Three letters from Leipzig artists to Daniel Chodowiecki, 1726-1801, Polish painter and printmaker who spent most of his life in Germany. The letters are from Johann Friedrich Bause, Christian Gottlieb Geyser, and Johann Georg Penzel. Text is in German and printed in a font that simulates handwriting. 32 pages. Three small tipped-in color plates of work by Chodowiecki. Color text vignettes and decoration. Slender hardcover, 10 x 6.5 inches. Fine binding of half leather (spine and corners) and marbled paper boards. Good with moderate wear, short cracks of the front inner hinge. Sound and securely bound. The Italian biologist and physician founded the science of microscopic anatomy and allowed for great advances in physiology and embryology. 45 pp. Latin text. Original binding of one-quarter leather and marbled boards. 21 x 14 cm. Sound and complete. Wear at the head of the spine and along the joints. Moderate foxing of the text. Provenance: Brief ink notations dated 1811 indicate this copy was presented by Testa (Italian physician, 1756-1814), but we're unsure whether some or all of the writing is in his hand. Later ownership signature in pencil of Howard B. Adelmann (1898-1988), American zoologist, embryologist, and historian of science who taught at Cornell from 1921-1963. He wrote the authoritative five-volume work, Marcello Malpighi and the Evolution of Embryology (Ithaca: Cornell University Press, 1966.)

The artisanship of Francesco Amato is found throughout the town of Ravello on the Amalfi Coast of southern Italy. 24 pages of introductory text, followed by 80 full-page drawings of fireplaces, windows, sculptures, and other creations in the villas and piazzas of Ravello. All text is in Italian, except for a brief tribute in English by Gore Vidal. (The American writer owned La Rondinaia, a Ravello villa with four Amato fireplaces.) Four color plates with facing tissue guards. First separate edition of this story by Restif De La Brettone (1734-1806), libertine French printer and writer, the prolific author of more than 200 rambling novels and memoirs, often risqué or pornographic but laced with sentimental moralizing. Memorably described by the 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica as a man who was "inordinately vain, of extremely relaxed morals, and perhaps not entirely sane.
