Noted Austrian modern dancer, wife of famed Viennese psychiatrist/psychoanalyst Lothair Henry Rubinstein (1908-71); fleeing Austria in 1938, they both became well established in London. ANS, heavy stock 4¼" X 2" calling card, Vienna, Austria, 1937 November 17. Near fine. Though not indicated, recipient was Irving Schwerke (1893-1975), American expatriate pianist and music critic. Harmel thanks him "for your letter from Nov. 3rd and hopes that you have been at her recital!" Regrets she cannot see him, "But coming here again in spring I shall let you know and hope to meet you then!" Boldly penned in blue fountain pen on both sides. Description:
Known as "the first great Balanchine dancer," this renowned American ballerina was one of George Balanchine's first pupils at his famed school; she debuted in 1942 before joining the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo briefly in 1943, later performing with other notable groups and on Broadway before retiring in 1957. IPS, 8" X 10", n.p., n.y. Near fine. Superb glossy head-and-shoulders studio portrait of a young Moylan, handsomely inscribed and signed in blue ink in a light area at lower right: "To Edna -- / With my very best wishes / Mary Ellen Moylan," followed by her usual stick figure drawing of a ballet dancer -- reminiscent of Leslie Charteris' "Saint" figure. A choice example, not dated but clearly of 1950s vintage at the height of her fame.
