Description:
New York: Prentice-Hall Inc, 1945. Hardcover. 8vo. Black cloth with gilt spine lettering. xx, 278pp. Frontispiece, illustrations, graphs. Very good. Faint edgewear. Tight, nice 6th printing of the only book penned by this early Major Leagues pitcher and later college baseball coach (1882-1957). Connie Mack and Grantland Rice each provide brief introductions. Portion of front jacket flap neatly tipped to front flyleaf. Interestingly, front and rear pastedowns each bear ownership signature of William H. Groves, long-time Professor of Physical Education for Men and coach at Eastern Illinois University (1951-1969). Amusingly, on one leaf he lightly pencils a contradiction to Coombs "correct swing of the bat" advice ("The swing of the bat should be level, parallel to the ground"), stating: "no! it should be slightly upward to squarely meet the ball decending [sic] at an angle." Fun copy of an uncommon title -- a volume in the "Prentice-Hall Health and Sports Series.

Tight and nice first edition of this hands-on how-to -- and with unique autograph twist: Tipped to front flyleaf is a fine, heavy stock 5" X 3" card signed by one of Bible's star players from his final (1946) season as University of Texas's head football coach, the year just prior to this book's publication: Hubert "Hub" Bechtol signs large and bold in black fineline, penning "University of Texas / Football 1944-45-46" beneath and dating it 1 August 1980 at upper right; interestingly, Bible died just about nine months before Bechtol signed this. Bechtol (1926-2004) played end for these three seasons; in 1991 he was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame. Lower right front board corner slightly bumped; jacket faintly edgeworn. Handsome, tight first edition of this surprisingly scarce how-to. Bauer (1922-2007) was the famed New York Yankees (1948-59) and Kansas City Athletics (1960-61) right fielder who went on to manage the Athletics (1961-62), Baltimore Orioles (1964-68) and Oakland Athletics (1969); in 1966 he led the Orioles to their first World Series title. This special copy bears a unique frontispiece, for tipped to the blank leaf facing the title page is a signed head-and-shoulders portrait of a smiling Bauer in Yankees uniform. Very good. This printed photograph shows tape stains at each corner and lower edge center. Bauer signs large and bold in blue ballpoint across the center.
