NY: Covici, Friede. 1930 on the title page, but this is the 3rd printing from 1931. An early printing of the best-selling sex manual of all time. An unusually frank work on human sexuality and the art of physical love for married couples. Written by a Dutch gynecologist and supposedly for sale only to "physicians, lawyers, ministers, educators, and social workers." In practical effect, it became a bestseller with the general public for decades, despite (or partly because of) being added in 1931 to the Vatican's list of banned books. A scarce item from the dawn of the Baby Boom era. Published years before the sexual revolution, the advent of "the pill," legalized abortion, and other societal changes. While not exactly a taboo subject in the 1940s, the front cover carries this notice: "This report is issued by the Medical Advisory Committee of Consumers Union for the use solely of physicians and social workers and of others who are married and have been advised by their physicians to use contraceptives."

First published in 1762 and a standard text for decades after. Not stated but written by Robert Lowth, a Bishop of the Church of England and Oxford Professor of Poetry. Commonly known as "Lowth's Grammar," his work contains many of the familiar grammar rules that were impressed upon generations of students from the 18th century on. Currier McEwen was an internationally recognized authority on the hybridization irises. He was dean of New York University of Medicine and was instrumental in founding the NYU Medical Center. He died in 2003 at age 101.
