Boston: F. Trifet. First Edition . Gilt Decorated Green Cloth. Near Fine/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Two volumes - Volume I ( 1867 - 1868, 92 pp. ) and Volume 2 ( 1868 - 1869, 112 pp. ). Volume I has been trimmed before binding and has narrower margins than Volume 2 and results in a slightly smaller volume. All edges are gilt, the covers are bright and the pages are tight and bright with no tears. Topics include American and forwign stamps and although the title suggests numismatics, there are very few references to that field of study in these two volumes. This is a very nice run of this scarce early stamp-collecting journal, which I believe went to four volumes in total.

Contains 36 pp., woodcut illustration on front cover and repeated on title page, moderate foxing throughout, covers somewhat darkened, spine about 1/2 chipped away, old repair (sewn with thread) on lower spine. Contains 416 pp., lithograph frontispiece, marbled end pages and page ends; portions of the marbled covers are peeled and rubbed, small portions of the leather spine and corners are peeled and scuffed; a respectable, tight copy.

Twelve manuscript letters from the Upson family of the Wolcott/Southington/Plantsville area: 1. Five letters from Bennett Upson to Willis (at times spelled Wyllys) Upson of Southington. Bennett was a salesman (apparently for the Atkins, Allen & Co. of Bristol - selling various goods including cotton gins. The letters date from 1837 to 1842 and relate to business and personal matters at home; 2. Exemption from Military Service for Wyllys Upson dated April 1, 1847, signed by Noah Byington of Wolcott; 3. Letter to Willis Upson from N. T. Porter dated August 4, 1857 relating to business matters; 4. Letter to "Brother" from Willis Upson dated November 12, 1878; 5. Three letters from Edward Upson to family members dated from 1873 to 1878 relating to life in the military and family matters; 6. Letter from Grandmother Daniels to Willis Upson dated April 29, 1882 relating to her cow.
