Front wrapper detached with some loss along the bottom edge, but present; lengthwise crease to the pamphlet as a whole from being folded. An interesting address that compares the Civil War with the Second Boer War and how calamitous it would have been had Lee not surrendered but followed Jefferson Davis's vision of the Civil War having "entered upon a new phase. . . . Relieved from the necessity of guarding particular points, our army will be free to move from point to point, to strike the enemy in detail far from his base" (qtd on p. 4). Uncommon.

As issued, in publisher's red cloth with title and saber and sheild vignette on the spine. All plates are present as called for. An exceptionally bright copy of a book rarely seen thus. The spine gilt is just a bit dulled, but the stamped silver shield on the spine, so often rubbed, is very bright; contents are clean and sharp but for one leaf with small loss to the bottom corner of the margin--possibly a paper flaw; nowhere near the text. Nevins call this "[a]n exceptionally interesting and reliable memoir by a surgeon who served in the cavalry of Bedford Forrest" CWB I, 183. Wyeth authored a notable biography of Forrest first appearing in 1899. As issued, in gray cloth with dust jacket. A bright, fresh copy in similarly sharp jacket. This copy additionally signed and inscribed by Divine on the front free endpaper: "To / . . . / May you ever be mindful / of the valor of the Confederate / Soldier / John E. Divine / 12-16-83." Given the 1984 publication date this was obviously presented by Divine "fresh off the press.

Richmond: Richmond Press, 1927. Very Good binding. Octavo. 32 pp. Reprint. Stapled into stiff, printed wrappers. Light wear and some pencil bracketing to the epigraph on the cover; contents clean. Christian assures the reader that his address "will be in no spirit of carping criticism, with no desire to do injustice to [Lincoln], and will be as free from sectional prejudice and passion as one who has suffered as I have, by the conduct of Mr. Lincoln and his followers, can make it" (p. 1). It is nevertheless, a searing partisan assessment of who Christian calls a "Godless tyrant." Haynes 3413.

A bit of wear with light chipping and some staining to the covers; notable stain to the fore-edge margin of the first leaf; contents are generally toned. An early edition of a frequently reprinted address. Christian assures the reader that his address "will be in no spirit of carping criticism, with no desire to do injustice to [Lincoln], and will be as free from sectional prejudice and passion as one who has suffered as I have, by the conduct of Mr. Lincoln and his followers, can make it" (p. 1). As issued, in navy cloth with title in gold on the front cover and the spine. Light shelfwear to the binding including what appears to be a very little paint on the bottom edge of the front board; offsetting to the endpapers, otherwise, it is largely clean. Keith's addresses have quite a range, but a couple relate to the American Civil War, including a sketch of General Eppa Hunton. Haynes 9923.

Lee and the Southern Confederacy, 1807-1870." Scant and scattered pencil marginalia including on one of the maps; maps are in generally nice condition but one has a small, tasteful and early mend to verso. Addresses commemorating the "virtual disbanding of the Revolutionary Army." Extremely rare in commerce. OCLC identifies only 3 copies in institutions.

[Philadelphia, 1864], 1864. Original Wrappers. Fair binding. Octavo. 4 pp. Removed from volume, retaining the original wrappers with title on the front cover. Wrappers are separated at the spine and detached; chipping to the extremities of the front wrapper; loss to the bottom corner of the rear wrapper. A letter from General H. M. Naglee to W[illiam] D. Kelley, dated September 27, 1864, condemning disclosure of the treatment of McClellan by Stanton and Lincoln. A second letter (A Second Chapter from the Secret. . . .) was subsequently published and it appears both letters were collected and perhaps reissued together in 1864 as campaign material for General McClellan's 1864 bid for the White House. All editions of this letter are uncommon in the trade and scarcely more than a dozen institutional holdings of this edition according to OCLC. Sabin 51720.

Bound as issued in stitched wrappers; light soiling as well as some creasing to the wrappers; limited shelfwear; minimal foxing. A very nice copy of an uncommon pamphlet, presenting, as Nevins writes, "fervent pleas that the Old Dominion cast her lot with her Southern sisters" (Nevins II, p. 245) in seceding from the Union. Not unexpectedly, a number of the arguments center around slavery. Uncommon. Sabin 1395.

Wrappers were cut 1/4" shorter than than the textblock; light soiling to the covers, but a nice and internally clean copy. Folding map is present and but for a little rippling where it was tipped in, is crisp. Dornbusch IV, 13575.

Octavo. 31, [1 (advert)]; 8 pp. Removed from nonce volume, and stitched into early plain wrappers; contents printed in black in two columns. Wrappers are worn with "Wade, B. F." in pencil at the top corner; additionally, previous owner name, "Rev. Dr. H. Cox / 4.14.----1863" in the center of the front wrapper. The title page of the first tract has a penciled "2" at the top corner and one instance of crayon writing in margin of the same page; additionally, on instance of crayon underlining on the title page of Tract No. 3 as well as a penciled "3" at the top corner. Resolutions out of the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts with regard to the Alabama Claims on the part of the United States government. The claims center around the British Government having secretly sold the Confederate States, the CSS Alabama and the U. S. request for damages. Contains also a copy of the treaty between the U. S. and Britain with regards to the water boundary between U. S. and British possessions in North America. Uncommon. Only one copy located in OCLC.

Removed from nonce volume, spine is lacking; original wrappers are present but worn with edge-chipping and loss to the top corner of the front wrapper; modern stitching. First issued in London (Trubner & Co., 1865), this is a thorough account of the Peninsula campaign, written from the Union perspective. One of the Loyal Publication Society's pamphlets describing events of the war. Dornbusch III, 1563; Sabin 21846.

London: printed by T. Reynolds, and sold by the booksellers of London and Westminster, 1730. Disbound. Good binding. Folio. [2], 8 pp. Removed from binding. Title page is nearly detached; margins are closely trimmed with no text loss but for a portion of the price on the title page; contents clean. Includes the votes around the recently signed Treaty of Seville (1729) reaffirming among other things, British control of Gibraltar that was ceded to them in 1713. In addition to the votes there is a nearly 2-page dissent on various aspects. There are several sections related to the Pension and Mutiny bills as well as a vote to cease maintaining a 12,000-soldier Hessian mercenary force because of the expense. This vote is accompanied by a dissenting argument for the value of such a force of foreign troops. ESTC T57735.
