Front wrapper detached with some loss along the bottom edge, but present; lengthwise crease to the pamphlet as a whole from being folded. An interesting address that compares the Civil War with the Second Boer War and how calamitous it would have been had Lee not surrendered but followed Jefferson Davis's vision of the Civil War having "entered upon a new phase. . . . Relieved from the necessity of guarding particular points, our army will be free to move from point to point, to strike the enemy in detail far from his base" (qtd on p. 4). Uncommon.

As issued, in publisher's red cloth with title and saber and sheild vignette on the spine. All plates are present as called for. An exceptionally bright copy of a book rarely seen thus. The spine gilt is just a bit dulled, but the stamped silver shield on the spine, so often rubbed, is very bright; contents are clean and sharp but for one leaf with small loss to the bottom corner of the margin--possibly a paper flaw; nowhere near the text. Nevins call this "[a]n exceptionally interesting and reliable memoir by a surgeon who served in the cavalry of Bedford Forrest" CWB I, 183. Wyeth authored a notable biography of Forrest first appearing in 1899. As issued, in gray cloth with dust jacket. A bright, fresh copy in similarly sharp jacket. This copy additionally signed and inscribed by Divine on the front free endpaper: "To / . . . / May you ever be mindful / of the valor of the Confederate / Soldier / John E. Divine / 12-16-83." Given the 1984 publication date this was obviously presented by Divine "fresh off the press.

Neat and contemporary manuscript title on the front free endpaper; text is heavily foxed throughout. An interesting collection of early Virginia laws including laws relating to enslaved persons; various individuals allowed to build roads and bridges, some with tolls; matters relating to soldiers; and more.

Good binding. 12mo. 12 pp. Removed from a binding and lacking original printed wrappers, recently sewn through the notches to keep bifolium together. Ink drop stain to the outer margin of the fore-edge, not affecting any text, otherwise contents are clean. A brief sketch of the Virginia Senator. Haynes 11092.

Light soiling to the covers; early pencil catalog number on the front cover; presentation stamp deep in the inner margin of the first page. Interesting piece of campaign literature in opposition to James Ross for governor and discussing at length his role in the presidential election debacle of 1800 and especially his bill that attempted to take from Congress the role it constitutionally was required to play. Light wear to the covers including some silverfishing to the top inner margin of the rear wrapper and diminishing through the next several leaves; light soiling, but largely a remarkably copy. Deaccessioned as a library duplicate, the only indication being a mid-20th century gift stamp deep in the inner margin of p. 3; contents clean. An address criticizing incumbent Pennsylvania governor Thomas McKean and recommending Simon Snyder as governor in the 1805 election. While Snyder lost to McKean in a contentious 1805 contest, he would ultimately win in 1808 and serve three terms. Keith's addresses have quite a range, but a couple relate to the American Civil War, including a sketch of General Eppa Hunton. Haynes 9923.

From a massive, multi-volume work, this single volume on the Post Office Department is complete in itself.
