Description:
London: Faber & Faber, 1999. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 12mo (tall). Full burgundy paper boards. 83 pp. Fine condition. Alcestis is the story of a king, Admetus, who is able to escape death because his wife, Alcestis, has volunteered to die in his place. Ted Hughes began his translation of Euripedes' play in 1993, almost completing it then, but breaking off to fulfill commissions for English versions of Oresteia and Racine's Phedre, and for the book that came to be called Tales from Ovid. As was true of the other works, Hughes' Alcestis goes beyond mere translation to an inspired rethinking of the story in terms of his own vision of human suffering. His additions to the text include an expanded burlesque treatment of Hercules' drunk scene and an episode involving Prometheus and his vulture. Hughes took up the play agan and finished work on it a few months before his death in 1998.

Description:
London: William Heinemann. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. 16mo. 1968, 1961. Full red cloth. xliii, 397, 8; v, 367, 8 pp. Light rubbing to extremities and bumps to spine ends of both volumes. Dust jackets are price clipped. Jacket of vol. I is heavily chipped to foot, sunned to spine. Jacket of vol. II is stained, darkened to spine, a few small chips. Ausonius (Decimus Magnus), c. A.D. 310 - c. 395, a doctor's son, was born at Burdigala (Bordeaux). After a short period during which he was an advocate, he took to teaching rhetoric in a school which he began in the University of Bordeaux in 334. Among his pupils was Paulinus who was afterward Bishop of Nola; and he seems to have become some sort of Christian himself. Surviving works, some with deep feeling, some it seems composed for fun, some didactic (he was a Professor), include much poetry and in prose an address of thanks to Gratian for his consulship, as well as other works.
