Conrad Lycosthenese [1518-1561] was a humanist and encyclopedist born in Alsace. The present two books are a collection of apothegms, porverbs, and parables from ancient Greek and Roman writers and philosophers. Rubbing and small tears to wrappers. Trimming to edges. Several leaves cut at top margins towards end of book two, with loss to text and page numbers, starting on p. 85. Lacks endpapers. Otherwise a very good copy.

Dust jacket is price clipped, age toned, a few tears to edges, some light staining to spine. The great English authors of the period 1500-1700 made copious use of proverbs, native and imported, by direct quotation and by allusion, and their full meaning cannot be readily grasped without recognition of the proverbial phrases that they had in mind.
