Description:
New York, NY: Viking Press. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1975. First Edition. Hardcover. James Thomas Brudenell, Seventh Earl of Cardigan (1797-1868) , dragoon, hussar, huntsman, landholder, husband, adulterer, sometime Member of Parliament, duelist, probably the most hated and adulated aristocrat of his time, waited for almost sixty years for his moment of glory (or disaster, as his enemies and most historians would insist) . When it came, it took place in an obscure Crimean valley, lasted 20 minutes, and was dubbed The Charge of the Light Brigade. This biography brilliantly adds to what is known about Cardigan - that he led a long life of such extravagance, scandal and glitter that it can stand as a paradigm for all that attracts and repels us about the life of the privileged in the English era between the Regency and the heyday of Victoria. The top of the binding is slightly darkened; the jacket has wear at the corners and spine ends. Includes endnotes, bibliography, and index.… Read More

New York, NY: Oxford Univ. Press. New in New dust jacket. 2003. Hardcover. After the heartbreaking death of his son Willie, Abraham Lincoln and his family fled the gloom that hung over the White House, moving into a small cottage outside Washington, on the grounds of the Solders' Home. Description:
Cary, North Carolina, U. S. A.: Oxford Univ Press. New in New dust jacket. 2003. First Edition. Hardcover. Thomas Jefferson advocated a republic of small farmers - free and independent yeomen. Yet as president he presided over a massive expansion of the slaveholding plantation system - particularly with the Louisiana Purchase - squeezing the yeomanry to the fringes and to less desirable farmland. Now Roger G. Kennedy conducts and eye-opening examination of that gap between Jefferson's stated aspirations and what actually happened. The author focuses on the character, ideas, and ambitions of Thomas Jefferson to show how he and other Southerners struggled with the moral dilemmas presented by the presence of Indian farms on the land they coveted, by enslavement of their workforce, by the betrayal of their stated hopes, and by the manifest damage being done to the earth itself. The pressures upon him, both psychological and economic, are detailed, as are the occasions on which decisions… Read More

Description:
New York, NY: Harper. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 2009. First Edition. Hardcover. Authoritative and utterly engrossing, Mrs. Lincoln is the long-awaited portrait of the woman who so richly contributed to Lincoln's life and legacy. Her story is inextricably tied with the story of America and with her husband's presidency, yet her life is an extraordinary chronicle on its own. Born in the south, she was well-educated and well-connected. The assassination of her husband haunted her for the rest of her life. Her disintegrating downward spiral resulted in a brief, and some say unjustified, traumatizing involuntary incarceration in an asylum and in Europe during her later years. One of the most tragic and mysterious of nineteenth-century figures, Mary Todd Lincoln and her story symbolize the pain and loss of Civil War America. The jacket is rubbed a bit at the top and has wrinkles at the spine top. The binding has a small bend in the top gutter and slight discoloration and the… Read More

Marina Oswald stayed with her for a time as her husband, Lee, went to New Orleans to look for work. They corresponded while the Oswalds were in Louisiana, and some of the letters are quoted in this book. After the Oswalds returned from New Orleans, they stayed with Mrs. Paine; she heard of an opening at the Texas School Book Depository, where Lee gained a position. New York, Ny, U. S. A.: Random House, Incorporated. Very Good in Fine dust jacket. 1989. Hardcover. "During our White House years I said almost nothing about how I really felt regarding the controversies that swirled around me. But now those years are over, and it's my turn to describe what happened. " This is the memoir of one of the most fascinating, controversial, and enigmatic First Ladies in American history. As soon as Reagan took office in 1981, his wife found herself in the spotlight of criticism, particularly over her plans for renovating the White House and for ordering new china. Stories continued, about her role in her husband's policy decisions, her relationships with Donald Regan and with the Reagan children. She talks openly about her influence in the Reagan administration, reflects warmly on her lifelong love affair with her husband, and shares the darker times as well. Carbondale, IL: Southern Illinois Univ. Pr. New. 1996. Softcover. NEW - STILL IN PUBLISHERS WRAPS. This spirited biography of George Heller serves as an accessible inside history of the Golden Age of radio and TV through its glory days and its era of shame - McCarthyism and political blacklisting. In this book, Rita Morley Harvey tells the story of the charismatic, controversial Heller and the national union of radio and television artists from its inception in the 1930s to the Golden Age of television and the McCarthy era. Always prominent in Harvey's account of what happened to the union, its members, and to Heller and his friends are the shadows cast by the radical right in government and those willing to help in its dirty work. The story of AFTRA begins during the Great Depression, a time of great trust and camaraderie as well as tremendous hardship. In the 1950s the Golden Age of television, the radio and television industry was beset by Joseph R. McCarthy and all he came to… Read More
