Boston: White-Smith Music Publishing Company, 1894. First printing. Paperback. Very Good Plus. Attractive copy of this music journal with cover page advertisement for complimentary copies: "F. L. Barnard at his Music Store; 307 Union Street, Lynn, Mass...." Faint vertical crease to first two pages, otherwise, light age discoloration, clean, unmarked, rear page also has advertisement with illustration for F. L. Barnard, Practical Optician (same address). Includes plate, sheet music, articles, news and advertisements. Above average. Very interesting periodical. White, Smith & Company (est. 1874) was a music publishing firm in Boston, Massachusetts. It issued sheet music and published industry journals, notably the monthly Folio, published from 1869-1895. Questions welcome. Images can be made upon request.

Edge worn but heavily so at the spine, still attached, and otherwise the book binding is sound. Former owner's name on the front fly leaf, o/w unmarked. Mostly clean, shows handling wear and a few page tears from used. Many large black and white photographs of different instruments with pictures of musicians from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, includes photo of the conductor, Desire Defauw.. 9 x 12 inches; 54 [1] pp. Uncommon.

Oversize stapled wraps: French fold card covers with spine very worn but not detached, also rubbing to cover edges. A sound binding, name on front cover, handling wear throughout including some tears. Wonderfully illustrated in large format b/w photographs. Only near the end of the publication does it become apparent this is a souvenir promotional for the Scot Radio company.

David Grimsted's Melodrama Unveiled explores early American drama to try to understand why such severely limited plays were so popular for so long. Concerned with both the plays and the dramatic settings that gave them life, Grimsted offers us rich descriptions of the interaction of performers, audiences, critics, managers, and stage mechanics. Because these plays had to appeal immediately and directly to diverse audiences, they provide dramatic clues to the least common denominator of social values and concerns. In considering both the context and content of popular culture, Grimsted's book suggests how theater reflected the rapidly changing society of antebellum America.
