Illustrated paper on press board with moderate wear to edges and corners, covers lightly rubbing, spine more so, clean. Well bound copy, covers firmly attached, book lass flat. Free of markings. Frontispiece with tissue guard with facing title page foxed, o/w minor foxing to pages, and otherwise bright and clean. Woodcut illustrations throughout including many full page, make this an especially appealing Victorian young adult book. 222 pages, plus 2 pages of advertising for other "Bodley" travelogue titles. Hard to find in exceptional condition, this copy good, internally very good. Excellent reference on these book online "Juvenile Travelogue Series" Horace Scudder (1838-1902) was a teacher and author. He wrote a number of children's books and for a time was the editor of the Atlantic Monthly as well as the Riverside Magazine for Young People.

Small brown cloth binding, some discoloration/fading to rear cover, spine gilt decoration/lettering still bright well bound, clean. First gathering of leaves (about the first 20) are slightly distended from the binding, but are still firmly bound in, these pages show moderate foxing, balance of book minor foxing. Complete in itself, the spine says volume 1 and is part of a series, but this book is complete in itself.
