Description:
Philadelphia: George R. Graham, 1844. First Edition . Hardcover. Good+. Title pages and contents pages (with accurate contents) say that these are volumes 24 and 25; however, the individual issues are numbered as vols. 25 & 26. I can't explain this. A good plus copy in a fine new binding by Milagro of Corrales, of green cloth with beautiful marbled endpapers. Some foxing on plates, very little elsewhere. Contributions to this remarkable magazine include: The Lady's Yes, Pain in Pleasure and Loved Once by Elizabeth B. Barrett (Elizabeth Barrett Browning); Terpsichore by Oliver Wendell Holmes; John Shaw and 2 Sketches of Naval Men: John Barry and John Templer Shubrick by James Fenimore Cooper; New York Fountains and Astor Baths by Catharine M. Sedgwick; Review of Orion, Our Contributors: Robert T. Conrad (unattributed) and the poem Dreamland by Edgar Allan Poe, plus several other unattributed reviews (Poe no longer was editor in this year but still an important contributor); Childhood,…

Description:
Philadelphia: Charles J. Peterson, 1844. First Edition . Hardcover. Good+. The original bound volume, good plus in a fine new binding by Milagro of Corrales, of green cloth with beautiful marbled endpapers. Originally a companion to Graham's Magazine, and run by 2 of its most important editors, in later years it became Peterson's after the departure of Ann Stephens. It featured many of the best woman writers of the day, most of whom are now forgotten; the best contributions may be those by the editors. Illustrated with many engravings including some very striking mezzotints, colored embroidery patterns, and the famous fashion plates, of which 4 here are hand-colored. There is also a nice hand-colored plate of a rose. Some of the plates are still fairly white; some have toned to brow, and some are foxed. Foxing is minimal in the text except where adjacent to plates. There is an occasional waterstain.

Washington, D.C.: self, 1853. First Edition . Hardcover. Good. 1st in book form, 12mo, a good copy in original blue cloth. Spine very faded, chipped at top; binding is holding well. There is a waterstain on the lower third of many pages throughout the book. Begins with Year 4, #11 of the Ploughshare (changes to 'Plowshare' with Year 5 #28), running to Year 5 #34, Jan. 1852 to Dec. 1853. It is written entirely in phonetically spelled English, using many odd characters. The content ranges from political essays to chess. He also has articles on an entirely new alphabet he developed, the Cosmophonetic alphabet. Then there are 2 issues of The Cosmopolitan, which are printed entirely in that alphabet. Follows issues 16-30 of The American Reporter, again printed phonetically; it includes reports from Congress and discussions of the development of his phonetics. The methods and characters he used do look very similar to the phonetic pronunciation guides now used in dictionaries, and he may have been…
