First Edition . Hardcover. Good. About 60 pieces of music bound into 2 folio volumes by the owner/collector, Hattie Savage. One is still in its original binding; the other we have had rebound in new black textured cloth quite similar to the original, with the original leather piece stamped with the owner's name pasted on the front cover. There are waterstains on the foreedge of many pieces in the rebound volume. The non-rebound volume has a waterstain on the front cover but none inside. It was bound professionally by J.G. Roberts & Co. of Boston, and they provided an engraved Contents page, which has the titles filled in by hand. Good only; covers soiled and worn; there was once a spine but it is gone. Unmarked inside. The last 5 pp. are ads, and the one on the rear cover is very interesting: " The Witmark Amateur Minstrel Guide and Burnt Cork Encyclopedia". Has drawings from sections on "How to Black Up" and "How to Get up Cakewalks".

Songbook compiled as "A gift to the college from the class of 1934 with special dedication to Miss Sarah Atsatt who inspired us to sing". This copy was presented to Dr. Hartley B. Alexander who composed the lyrics for the first song featured, "Onward! Alma Mater Song". 21pp. Pp. 11-14 contains one of the earliest published pieces by Vladimir Ussachevsky, composer and later co-founder of the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center, becoming one of the major innovators of 20th-century electronic music (it was he who proposed the ADSR envelope for electronic sound). Emigrating from Russia in 1930, he began studying music at Pomona College, a sister school of Scripps College. In 1951 he was to create the first-ever recording of electronic music. The piece here is called 'Inspiration (Russian Tune)', arranged by Ussachevsky.
