Description:
1865. Ephemera. One sheet of paper with another sheet with the oath of identity attached to the back (the photocopy of the oath is part of the papers that will come with the document). Allen St. John enlisted as a Private on August 18, 1862, was promoted to Corporal on November 4, 1862, and to Sergeant on March 23, 1864. When he joined his unit in 1862 it was known as the 19th Regiment Connecticut Volunteer Infantry. In November of the same year the name was changed to 2nd Connecticut Heavy Artillery. The regiment served in the defenses of Washington, D. C. until May 17, 1864 when it was ordered to join the Army of the Potomac. It participated in the battles of Spottsylvania, Tolopotomy, Hanover Court House, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Winchester, Fisher's Hill, Cedar Creek, Hatcher's Run, Petersburg, all in Virginia. The papers come framed in a nice vintage double matted bevelled wood frame decorated in black and gold. Condition is near fine.

Hardcover. This large celluloid photo album measures 7 x 16.5". The covers are celluloid and the spine is velvet. The front cover is decorated with a wintery image of a mill, an inset with the profile of a woman with long hair, and embossed floral motifs. An elaborate brass clasp is mounted on the edges to keep the album closed. There are slots for forty-eight photos and forty-four cabinet photos already inserted. Some appeared to have been pasted on. The vast majority of the photos are from the Midwest (Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois). Small dampstain to top edge, light wear and a few hairline cracks to edges. The velvet is in excellent shape. Very good.

Baldwin was a jurist, law professor at Yale, co-founder and president of the American Bar Association, and Governor of Connecticut. The letter reads: "Dear Mr. DeLancey, I think you will see the Hartford & Harlem road begun within a year. It is being fought by the old Parallel scheme, promoted by the New York, New Haven & Harlem road; but we have nevertheless obtained most of the legislation needed. I take pleasure in sending you a copy of my historical paper, recently printed. Yours sincerely, Simeon E. Baldwin." Omaha, NE. Ephemera. Two cabinet photos by the Hughes & Sandberg studio of Omaha, Nebraska. The studio was active with this name between 1893 and 1896. Measure 11 x 16.5 cm. One is of famous early aeronaut and balloonist Frank Zelno who died performing one of his many daring stunts on October 14th, 1916, in Cameron, Texas. The second photo is of a female named Jessie Zelns. There does not appear to be much information about her but the image depicts her in a simple dress with a background of a balloonist and a parachuter suggesting she too was a performer. Their names are inscribed on the original plates. Handwriting on the back of both photos reads: "At Courtland Beach / Omaha, Nebr". In very good condition.

Albany, NY, 1865. Hardcover. Sixty six leaves. Brown leather stamped in gold and blind, all edges gilt. The book belonged to Sarah A. Baker of Earlville, Madison County, New York, a student of the State Normal School of Albany, NY. The Normal School, founded in 1844, became the College for Teachers in 1914, and finally the University at Albany in 1962. The book contains eighty-eight autographs (many with brief dedications, a few with drawings), collected between the end of 1865 and the beginning of 1866.
