Description:
Mostly 1930s, consisting of 16 large (approximately 8 1/4 x 10 1/2”) swatches of doped (treated) fabric, held together with a steel clip, from wings or fuselages of identified airplanes, including Stearman, Lincoln-Paige, Waco, Aeronca, Eaglerock, Taylor Cub, etc. One older piece is described with an ink note in an unidentified hand, “Fokker D7 Fabric. Shot down WWI by Canadian Ace William C. Gaige (my first instructor).” The snapshots are of planes on the ground and in the air, crashes, aerial shots, pilots and one remarkable shot of a pilot bailing out of a plane (on fabric identified as “Bud Adams Taylor Cub. 2 Killed. Tangled Midair Over Dycer Airport [Los Angeles]”). The photographs are “free mounted,” which is to say that the corners are inserted into slits in the appropriate fabric and not mounted with adhesive.

Description:
n.p.: no publisher, n.d. [c.1917]. An extraordinary photographic album, documenting aircraft production at the Berlin based LFG company during the Great War. 37 original gelatin silver prints 4.5 x 6.5 inches, mounted on 8 x 12 inch cardstock with printed titles beneath. Photographs include the manufacturing plants at Adlershof and later at Kaiserdamm, including one picture of the wreckage of the devastating fire at Adlershof (blamed on the British Secret Service), which forced the relocation, production halls, and many of the company’s aircraft, both on the ground and in the air. One particularly striking image shows Germany’s most successful flying ace, Manfred von Richthofen - The Red Baron - piloting the company’s Roland D III. At a time when most military related operations were shrouded in secrecy it can only be assumed that such a volume was produced in extremely small numbers for a select group. The present copy is in fine condition bound in the original gilt lettered, coated cloth with…

Triangular red wool felt with ties. The pennant depicts Boston Light, two bi-planes and a monoplane, printing “Harvard / Boston Aero Meet 1910, A second souvenir pennant for the next year’s event has sewn letters “Aero-Meet” and depicts a biplane and prints “Boston/ August 26th to Sept. 4th 1911.” Both are in excellent condition. The 1910 show was America’s second major air show, and the first to feature competition. There were prizes for various records, the most important being the 33 mile round trip between the field at Squantum, on Boston Harbor, and Boston Light. It is illustrative of how quickly aircraft technology was progressing to note that it was only two years earlier that Glenn Curtiss became the first American to officially fly more than one kilometer. Another competition featuring the bombing of a dummy warship with plaster bombs was watched by a future President, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and others. An English pilot won, followed by the Wright Brothers team.…
