London: Geoffrey Bles, 1947. First Edition. A very good copy; inscribed by some of the stars of the 1949 film of the same title, based on this novel, apparently to someone involved in the production. Most prominent of these actors is Cyril Cusack, adding his grateful inscription.

Moscow: Goskinoisdat, 1944. First Edition. Publisher’s cloth; very good. An excellent association copy; presented by Sergei Eisenstein to American screenwriter Robert Rossen (All The King’s Men, The Hustler, The Sea-Wolf, A Walk in the Sun, etc.), “To Robert Rossen, Hollywood writer mobilisation with my best wishes. S. Eisenstein.” Additionally signed by Yutkevich. At this time, the director was completing work on the first part of Ivan The Terrible.

Los Angeles: Republic Productions, 1936. Duplicated film script, with the film company’s title page; 139 pages. Front wrapper detached; lacking back wrapper; some chips, tears and soiling, but overall very good. The front wrapper is dated over two months prior to the film’s final release under the title The Mandarin Mystery. Based on the Ellery Queen (Dannay and Lee) novel.

New York: Stackpole Sons, 1936. Second edition. A very good copy, formerly the property of a crew member on the set of the picture, eleased as “They Won’t Forget,” a fictional account of the Leo Frank case in Georgia (a notorious lynching). Inscribed by producer and uncredited director Mervyn LeRoy, as well as by the cast, which included Claude Rains, Elisha Cook, Jr., and, in her first screen role, Lana Turner.

No place of publication (presumably Culver City, California): MGM (presumably), [1934]. Approximately overall 29 1/2 x 39 1/2”; framed and glazed. An illustration board has been titled in black lettering “Stars of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios send Greetings to Jack Flynn,” and has 23 oval cut-outs, each about 5 x 3/1/2,” with photos of their stars, each of which has been signed (some inscribed) in ink (a little faded) on the mat under their pictures. This was prepared for a convention in Chicago of executives and distributors touting the coming season’s releases (an occasion for which MGM produced a short promotional film “MGM’s March On In 1934-1935”). Flynn, who appeared briefly in this film, was one of the company’s important distributors. Tellico Plains, Tennessee: Tellico Theatre, n.d. [1943 or later]. Single sheet, approximately 5 1/2 x 8 3/4”, printed in black on cheap paper, promoting “Chills/Thrills/Terror” with Bela Lugosi. Very good condition.

No place of publication: no publisher, 1938. First Edition. One of 800 numbered copies signed by Baer and illustrator Major. This volume consists of charcoal portraits of various Hollywood people, each signing below these caricatures; laid into this copy is the original charcoal sketch of Fritz Lang, signed by both Major and Lang. Very good in a custom cloth slipcase.

Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 1975. First Edition. Very good to fine in a lightly rubbed dust jacket.

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1941 or later. Later printing. Very good. Inscribed by Davies on the dedication page, and signed by him again on the front free endpaper, under which it has also been signed by Walter Huston, Eleanor Parker, and others who appeared in the 1943 film. Due to its pro-Stalinist nature, the film came under fire after the war. However, heavy-handed propaganda as it was, the Soviet Union was then our ally in a life and death struggle.

London: W.H. Allen, n.d. [1950]. Presumed first English edition. Basis for the 1950 film of the same title. Very good to fine; inscribed by the director and most of the cast: “Irene Dunne (Queen Victoria) 1950 / [Director] Jean Negulesco (the victime!) / Alec Guinness ‘Dizzy’ / Beatrice Campbell (Lady Emily) / [Brown] Finlay Currie/ In thanks for a happy film.” Also inscribed by Andrew Ray and Constance Smith.
