Georges Bridel Editeur, 1888. On the 9th of July 1875, two young missionaries, Creux and Berthoud, founded the Swiss mission station of Valdezia in the Northern Transvaal, with their field of action being a hard living and constantly tested society. The Swiss mission was famous for its high quality hospitals and schools. The Principal task was Evangelisation, however they strongly believed in the power of education as a tool to improve living conditions, with schools offering agricultural and industrial syllabi. Strong efforts to foster good race relations were made by the church, as well as a focus on cordial ties with other christian sects. This book, written in French, includes 32 plates and 1 map.

Description:
Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co. and The Imperial South African Association. Two pamphlets (16 pages and 15 pages) authored by the brother of South African writer, Olive Schreiner. Theophilus Schreiner was known for his temperance work and as a supporter of 'native' rights. He campaigned as pro-Rhodes and pro-War during the Anglo-Boer war and was in conflict with his sister over this. In the first pamphlet he argues that 'civilised' men of colour should be allowed to vote but not drink alcohol. The second pamphlet is a response the Conwright Schreiner's (husband of Olive) article on the "native question" that appeared in the Manchester Guardian of 30 October 1900. Conwright's Manchester article claims that all 'natives' were in favour of a Boer run state and in danger of being exploited by the 'mining capitalists'. Theophilus argues that this is wrong and that all 'civilised natives' favour a British run state. 16 pages and 15 pages. 1st Edition. Condition: Good. Binding: Softcover. Tissue… Read More
