P.251 mis-numbered as 275. Includes Account of the life of William Shakespeare. Full contemporary calf, 5 raised bands, black morocco title label with gilt lettering and ruling. Blind stamped foliate borders to spine-sides. Engraved title page showing circular vignette portrait of Shakespeare, with an intense Garrett in profile lurking from the left. Poor: sadly, in two halves, fully separated at pp. 142-3, but complete. Both joints cracked, losses to spine ends and title label. Tanned edges. Free endpapers excised. Various POIs to front free leaf and title page: Anne Read, Margaret Carlisle, John M/Read(?), an illegible POI, plus pen and later pencil doodles of a pigeon's head, parrot and rat to front endpapers. Two volumes. 12mo, pp. [292]; [252], with half-titles; in this edition the title-page vignettes show a drumming cherub and a blindfolded cherub drawing his bow. Plain modern paper wraps, the rear of volume I and volume II have early pulp paper covers beneath, edges untrimmed. Wrappers a little creased, dog-eared, toned, a little shaken. Volume I only: front blank grubby, pencil notes, POI in ink: "Siena Octbre 18./ 1818," closed tears to leaves G3 (4.5cm) and H4 (5.5cm), staining to the margins at the rear. Volume II only: some foxing to front and rear, scattered grubbiness, tear and small loss to bottom margin of leaf H8 (2.3cm). Good. A robust copy of a later Buisson edition of Montolieu's sentimental bestseller. January to June 1806. 12mo (in 6s), pp. ii, 430 + five b/w engraved frontispieces (lacks April frontis: "An elegant Portrait" of Lady Ogilby) and a second b/w plate to January issue, plus six hand-coloured fashion plates. Polished tree calf, spine divided by gilt rules, red and black morocco labels, other compartments tooled centrally in gilt, gilt board-edge tooling. Front joint, edges and extremities rubbed, corners bruised. Binders ticket to front pastedown: "Bound by H Earnshaw/ Printer Bookseller/ & Book Binder./ Colne,/ Lancashire./ Copper plate printing neatly executed," two POIs in sepia ink to ffep: "Mary Wiglesworth./........Townhead...." and underneath, in a less prepossessing hand: "Walter[?] Wilson/ Slaidburn". Bound in new half brown leatherette, single blind ruled, with original red morocco label re-pasted to spine, marbled paper boards. New head- and tailbands and marbled endpapers. Edges stained red (uneven fading). Original ffep � with POI in sepia ink � pasted to frontis, forming its recto, frontis cropped, with POI note in sepia ink pasted to leading edge, POI repeated on title page, which similarly appears to have been pasted to another (free) leaf, occasional clarifications to section titles in the same hand. Full polished tan calf, olive morocco labels, raised bands, spines elaborately tooled in gilt, double gilt-ruled borders, edges with gilt tooled border. Marbled edges and endpapers, blind turn-ins. Warmly inscribed by Eton chum in black pen to ffep of vol I: "Frederic, Carne, Rasch/ with the best wishes of/ his friend/ Lewis Henry Cockran/ On his leaving Eton/ Election 1864". Both vols. rubbed at joints and edges, worn at extremities, with nicking to spine heads and labels, especially vol. I. A few marks to boards. Both vols. some foxing, especially to front and rear, occasionally to margins, a few stains. Last few gatherings of Vol I toned. Else, both volumes tight and tidy. Lacking the additional title page mentioned in ESCT T221014. Binding repaired: later sturdy calf spine and corner reinforcements, stitched (through the board), plus vertically to spine, over darker leather boards; crude but effective. Boards considerably worn, large bald patches. Numerous POIs and inscriptions ("My book" plus date) to feps and verso of title page, including the hands of Thomas and Robert Warehem/ Wareham and George Young, suggesting use until at least 1788. Prelims loose, front hinge cracked, creasing, some staining, some worming to top margins, headlines occasionally crossed.
