Description:
Cosmopoli: Kama Shastra Society, 1885. This is a Near Fine copy of the first English translation of the now-famous "Art of Love," done for the Kama Shastra Society ("for private circulation only") by F.F. Arbuthnot and Sir Richard Francis Burton. Only the letters of their names appear on the Title Page. The First Edition (1873) was less than ten copies, so almost all extant are the three reprinted versions. There is a misprint of Burton's initials on page xiii, indicating the Second Issue. White vellum binding, ruled on the front cover in gilt; titling, rule, and "1885" on the spine. Clean text; xvi, 144 pages; index. The pages are rough-cut. Some light soiling, which seems inevitable, given the white binding. A very solid and attractive copy of this most-famous book of erotica.. Second Issue. Fine Binding. Near Fine/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Description:
London and Benares: Cosmopoli: For the Kama Shastra Society, 1885. Burton always had an interest in Eastern erotica; this is his translation from Sanskrit of a 15th Century work. In order to avoid Victorian charges of obscenity they were usually issued "for subscribers only." Here Burton and Arbuthnot disguised themselves by inverting their initials.[one wonders who might have been fooled]. After his death Burton's manuscript and notes were burned by Isabel. Only a tiny number, perhaps four or six, had been printed in 1873 with a different title. This is a Near Fine copy of the Third Issue of what is generally thought of as the First Edition; all three came out in 1885 [cf. Penzer 171-72 and Casada 73]. Rebound attractively in cloth with golden brown tips and spine. Titling in gilt within a green label on the spine. Clean text, 144 pages with marbled endpapers. Noted: a previous reader has written in pencil on the second free endpaper 'Kind of like the Kama Sutra only better."… Read More

Description:
London & New York: John Lane The Bodley Head & Dodd, Mead and Company, 1926. Lord George Gordon Byron (1788-1824) left his satirical poem incomplete, but it has been enjoyed nonetheless ever since. This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition Thus, a very nice production. The 93 illustrations and decorations by John Austen (1886-1948) are erotic, but not pornographic; in an art deco style, they are actually quite delightful. Clean text; 408 pages (includes Notes). The surface is soiled and the rear hinge is cracked but holding nicely. The fron paste-down has a bookplate featuring Captain Ahab; tiny bookseller sticker on the rear paste-down. A solid and enjoyable volume. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First Thus. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. Illus. by John Austen.

Description:
William Faro, Inc., 1930. D.H. Lawrence (1885-1930) wrote "Chatterley" in 1928, and it remained controversial for four decades. This is a Very Good (Minus) copy of the First Edition Thus, a "pirate edition" published by Samuel Roth (1893-1974) under his William Faro imprint. Roth has become infamous as a nice Jewish boy gone bad; he was prosecuted and jailed several times as a pornographer for publishing works that seem mild today; James Joyce enjoined him for a pirated edition of "Ulysses." Although an Orthodox Jew, he wrote and published an anti-Semitic screed. He particularly disliked J. Edgar Hoover, and ultimately, he may be a literary hero (with more than one tragic flaw). An unexpurgated European version came out in 1928 (Tauchintz), but the book was not legally published in America until 1959, so this version, although illegal, could be called the First American Edition. This is a large octavo; black cloth binding with a paper label on the spine. Clean text; 313… Read More

Description:
Stockholm: Jan Forlag, 1953. This is a Very Good copy of the First "Continental" Edition, in English but printed in Sweden. At this time the book was still under ban, and the copyright page states: "This edition not to be soldin the British Empire orU.S.A." This contains the unexpurgated text from 1928. Issued in softcover, the cream-colored paper does look a bit used at the edges and has some light smudging on the front cover, but what would one expect unless it had beenput away in a dark closet, say, for several decades? There is also a light crease on the rear cover, a diagonal chip to the lower front corner. A closed tear has been repaired with cello tape. Really, not too bad for what is now a period piece of literary history. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. First Thus.. Soft Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. Privately Printed.

Description:
Paris, London and New York: Societe Des Beaux-Arts, 1912. One of the most popular novels by French literatiste Theophile Gautier (1811-1872). A romance, with a reputation as gentle erotica. (Wikipedia says "Mademoiselle de Maupin (1835) In September 1833, Gautier was solicited to write a historical romance based on the life of French opera star Mlle Maupin, who was a first-rate swordswoman and often went about disguised as a man. Originally, the story was to be about the historical la Maupin, who set fire to a convent for the love of another woman, but later retired to a convent herself, shortly before dying in her thirties. Gautier instead turned the plot into a simple love triangle between a man, d'Albert, and his mistress, Rosette, who both fall in love with Madelaine de Maupin, who is disguised as a man named Théodore. The message behind Gautier's version of the infamous legend is the fundamental pessimism about the human identity, and perhaps the entire Romantic age. The novel… Read More

Description:
London: Vizetelly, 1888. Uchard (1824-1893) was a French dramatist and "man of letters." His erotic and romantic novel has also been published as "French and Oriental Love in a Harem." This is the First Edition in English (translator unknown). Blue decorative cloth binding, with cherubs and nymphs on the front cover; the spine features a Turkish quarter moon; decorations filled in black and gilt. Clean text; 339 pages, with two pages of publisher's adverts in the front; rough-cut edges. Many illustrations by Paul Avril. Exterior shows some wear, with rubbing and a bit of fray; corners have been bumped; spine has a bit of fade, but all lettering is still bright. Hinges are split, but still holding. Certainly a curiosity, an example of the fascination with "exotic" Arab culture that swept Europe in the 19th Century. In a plastic protector. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. First Edition.. Cosmopoli: Kama Shastra Society of London and Benares, 1891. Burton's famous translation was first published in 1886 by the nonexistant "Kama Shastra Society" formed to evade the restrictions imposed by the Obscene Publications Act of 1857. He was working on a revision at the time of his death. In one of the great acts of literary vandalism, Lady Burton and here sister burned this along with many more of his journals and manuscripts. Penzer called this "a mad fit of wantonness" and who can disagree? This is a Very Good copy of the posthumous reprint brought out by his sometime collaborator Foster Fitzgerald Arbuthnot. Orange cloth binding with a black leatherette spine; gilt titling on the spine. Clean text; xiv, 236 pages. Bumped corners and a slight lean.
