Description:
Boston: Phillips, Sampson, and Company, 1854. Scottish poet Thomas Campbell (1777-1844) wrote in what might be called a didactic romanticism. In addition to his literary work, he was one of the founders of the University of London. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of a Later Printing of the First American Edition (from a year earlier). This edition is uncommon, and not usually listed among Sargent's works. . Brown cloth binding, decoratively stamped on the covers and spine. Lettering on the spine is gilt, somewhat faded but completely visible. Clean text; 479 pages. Mildly cocked; with very light wear. Description:
Philadelphia: Porter & Coates, 1872. This is a lovely edition of one of Bobby Burns's most popular poems, presented in a decorative full-leather binding. A Very Good (Plus) copy. Gilt lettering on the front cover. Numerous illustrations by Frederick Augustus Chapman (engraved by J. Filmer). Unpaginated; approximately ......rounded pages, all gilt. There is no publication date, but per bibliographic concensus, Quercus observes 1872 as probable. This was a very popular book, and the publisher issued it many times, in differing bindings, until ultimate bankruptcy (Quercus makes no judgement if multiple bindings were the cause). This leather version seems less common than others. At any rate, a sweet little volume. Minor rubbing along the margins; one edge of the spine has split on the outside, but the book is holding well.. First Thus. Full-Leather. Very Good (Plus)/No Jacket. Illus. by F.A. Chapman. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

Description:
New York, London, Glasglow and Manchester: George Routledge & Sons, 1890. . This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of an undated edition (the First Edition was issued in 1877 by Lippincott.). Routledge has conveniently provided a list of MacDonald's works they publish, and the latest one shewn is "What's Mine is Mine" from 1886. Quercus therefore rather arbitrarily assigns this a publication date of 1890 and believes it to be an early American reprint (or possibly the First Edition Thus). It is an uncommon addition, with no holdings shown in WorldCat or Copac. Highly decorative Victorian binding; green cloth with the stampings filled with black, red, and gilt. The rear cover reproduces MacDonald's signature. Clean text; vii. 386 pages, with the ads a page in the front. Internally, there are some problems with the endpapers: both front and back FFEPs have wrinkles and the second FFEP has been torn in half. But the binding is beautiful, with only mild rubbing along the margins. There… Read More

Description:
New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1881. George MacDonald (1824-1905) was a Scottish anti-Calvinist minister, a poet, and a pioneer in modern fantasy literature. His importance as an influence on Tolkein, C.S. Lewis, and others, cannot be overstated. "MacDonald was acquainted with most of the literary luminaries of the day; a surviving group photograph shows him with Tennyson, Dickens, Wilkie Collins, Trollope, Ruskin, Lewes, and Thackeray. While in America he was a friend of Longfellow and Walt Whitman" (Wikipedia). This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First American Edition, in an attractive Victorian decorative binding. Not common today. Brown cloth, rules in black, with a flower design on the front cover in green and gilt. Lettering on the spine and cover also gilt. Clean text; 467 pages. Laid-in is a newspaper clipping from 1924 regarding MacDonald. Mild bumping/wear at the margins; a bit dusty on top edge; still, a solid copy of an uncommon title these days. Edinburgh & London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1896.
