Description:
London: T. Fisher Unwin Ltd, 1892. F. Madox Brown.. Stated "Second edition," though we assume this is actually a second printing or even the first edition, first printing with a new title page inserted (see below). His first book, written to amuse his sister Juliet and published when he was just seventeen years old. Illustrated with two full-page, black-and-white plates by his grandfather, F. Madox Brown, a painter closely associated with the Pre-Raphaelites. Harvey does not mention this second "edition"-- published the same year as the first--but does note a fourth edition dated 1898 and that "in all editions the title page is in red and black" [Harvey, A1(a-b)]. This copy in quarter blue cloth lettered in gilt on spine with cloth over boards matching that of the first edition, and with pattern on cloth extending to page edges, as in the first. Plain cream-colored endpapers pasted over the original patterned endpapers of the first edition, which are still just barely visible around the edges.… Read More

Description:
New York: Whittlesey House, 1945. First edition. Her first book for children, a story revolving around the donkey ridden by Christ into the city of Jerusalem. Illustrations in the text and on the dust jacket by Valenti Angelo, who began his career illustrating for Grabhorn Press. Although not indicated as such in the book, presume this copy was Angelo's as there is a TYPED LETTER SIGNED BY PRICE TO ANGELO laid in. Single-page, dated April 5, 1945, thanking him for his illustrations, "...I want to tell you how utterly charming your drawings are and how they have captured the whole mood of the story with an atmosphere of grace and springtime....They should make the little donkey's journey into book-land a very pleasant one indeed." In original mailing envelope with dab of gold paint on front. The book is aged a bit but still very good to near fine with offset to front endpaper, apparently from envelope. In bright, good dust jacket with edge chipping not affecting any lettering. Scarce in any dust jacket.

"Chosen by the editors of the Junior Literary Guild ... as the selection for October, 1930, sent to Older Girls between the ages of 12-16 years." Seventy poems for young people with introduction by Sandburg and illustrations by James Daugherty. 8vo silver-stamped blue moire cloth; 136 pages. Near fine with barest rubbing to edges; in very good dust jacket with quarter-inch chipped from head of spine, and internal tape repair to few splits and tears. All four corners of dust jacket flaps clipped, presumably as issued. Somewhat surprisingly this seems to have been a much nicer production than the true first edition.
