Description:
London: New Era Publishing, 1935. 'The Hairdressing Profession is one of the oldest known to mankind, yet strangely enough very little literature has hitherto existed in relation to the technical side of this most honourable and ancient profession... Hairdressing is not only an art, it is also a craft. Therefore, in order to produce a complete treatise, we have gathered together a group of contributors each of whom is a specialist in one or more branches of his craft... This book represents the first and only one of its kind in the English language, comprising a comprehensive treatise on hairdressing, ranging from the relatively simple tasks of the gentleman's hairdresser to the more involved technique of the ladies' hairdresser and the beauty specialist, and including necesssary and essential knowledge for the trichological consulting room.' (Gilbert A. Foan, preface). Bound in half leather with red cloth boards, gilt, 225 mm x 280 mm, 548 pages, illustrated frontis, 77 photographic and illustrated… Read More

Description:
Nottingham: Courtaulds Ltd, 1925. First Edition. Enchanting catalogue of 1920's women's fashion and textiles for home furnishings and interiors. "Beautiful frocks, like pictures, need an appropriate frame to set off their loveliness, and Courtaulds, whose marvellous development of Artificial Silk has resulted in the existence of the beautiful materials I hve endeavoured to describe to you in this little book, have also brought their years of experience in the manufacture and perfecting of this achievement, to bear upon the heavier forms of fabric necessary for furnishing processes. Surely, Alladin, when first his gaze alighted on those glistening treasures within the magic cave, felt much as I did when I viewed the modern storehouse of wonder, where are so artistically displayed, Courtauld's fabrics for the home. The room was ablaze with colour, rich Brocade and slim Taffeta Hangings, Damask and Tapestry - and what seemed, if possible, more exquisite than all the others, a reproduction of red… Read More

Spectacular collection of costume designs for the theatre. Dated from 1938 through to 1940, this vibrant collection displays outfits ranging from the 17th century French courtiers of Versailles to ancient Manchurian dress robes for the emperor. Two artworks also feature differing forms of a pictographic hand-drawn chop. [1758]. Description:
Paris: Meynial, 1925. First Edition. George Barbier. A complete and excellent set of the five annual issues illustrated with a total of sixty beautiful pochoir plates, complete with decorated pochoir title pages. 'Falbalas and Franfreluches' (Frippery and Finery: Fashion Diaries) represents a literary and artistic collaboration of unusual elegance and sophistication. French illustrator, George Barbier (1882 - 1932) spared no effort in the making of this beautiful collection, using the finest pigments and up to thirty stencils per print to create images of the highest quality reflecting fashionable themes of the day. The plates portray romance amidst exotic lands and ages past, including a native American idyll on the Missouri, a languid mistress cocooned in a hammock in the tropical Antilles, high baroque debauchery, and, of course, a myriad of lovers depicted in Paris at the height of the chic 1920s. Each annual includes twelve pages of fine writing by Barbier's contemporaries in the Parisian scene… Read More

STALIN ORDERS DINNER JACKET: The Moscow correspondent of the "Daily Sketch" says that an almost revolutionary change in drawing room fashions in Moscow is indicated by an order for a dinner jacket for the Soviet dictator (M. Stalin). It would have been unwise even a few months ago for a Soviet diplomat to wear evening dress at domestic gatherings. M. Stalin invariably wore a black and grey uniform coat or a Russian shirt. Lately hints have been dropped that evening dress should be encouraged to express Moscow's prosperity.'. Classic set of art deco 'pin-up girl' prints by Leon Heron (including one image of Felix the Cat being disciplined by a scantily-clad redhead): 1. Fascination 2. The Medicine Ball 3. Machéta 4. 'The Modern Girl and the merest male were sauntering down the sunny side of the street upon a particular day in 1925, talking of hardly anything other than very little at all. Just by way of passing a comment, and perchance because nothing else occurred to her at the moment, she spoke thus : "Girls have never been so attractive as they are to-day ; except perhaps in their original state in a garden called Eden," which was, all things to be considered, a most un-catty sentiment to be declared. "You refer, I dare to presume, to (a) the shingle, (b) the short skirt, and (c) the total absence of hips?" Being just the response one might expect from her companion,… Read More

Description:
Paris, 1930. A charming "album-jouet" ephemeral work using the dressing of cut-out dolls both to amuse young girls, and sneakily to educate them in the correct attire for study and school. In completely fine condition this charming and ephemeral work tells the story of Rouquette a gorgeous little girl who is beautifully dressed by her nanny. She and her sisters, messy Micheline and naughty Colette have to stay inside because of the rain, so they do some lessons causing lots of trouble. Unusually, on the fold out page all the cut out pieces provided to dress the girls and decorate their classroom are still intact; a rare children's pamphlet and a stylish example of juvenile Parisian fashion. Tall booklet, 327 x 160 mm; 10 pp. (rather strangely numbered, but numbered nonetheless); two of the pages comprising a fold-out of coloured cut-outs, the back cover a further fold-out with coloured illustrations partly for cutting out; reverse of back cover a further page of coloured illustrations, the front… Read More

Paris, 1910. An elegant Edwardian catalogue of hand-printed silk shirts, of oriental and Persian design, organic and of the most beautiful quality. "No more corsets, bustles and shoulder pads; they will wear soft, supple, fluid draperies, in soft and melted colours. Finally, the garment adapts to the body... shaped according to the silhouette." -Arthur Liberty Established in 1875, Liberty & Co. created a legacy of great British textile design, opening its first Parisian store after success at the 1889 Exposition Universale. Arthur Lasenby Liberty (1843 -1917) shared his circle with pre-Raphaelite painters Dante Gabriel Rosetti and John Everet Millais, and their mutual delight for the ornamentation of medieval illuminated manuscripts suffused their work with flowers. This catalogue dates from Liberty's move to its grand premises on the Boulevard des Capucines. Octavo, 4 leaves, colour illustrations throughout, a fine copy.
