Description:
Tours: Alfred Mame et fils, 1893. The splendid first French edition, which puts the English edition of 1890 in the shade. It is scarce - and not recorded by Ferguson - although almost half of the book is devoted to the Australian section of the voyage. Lord and Lady Brassey made several cruises around the world in their yacht, Sunbeam. Lady Brassey's account of their earlier voyage published in 1879 was very popular and went through many editions. Undertaken in 1886-7, this was to be Lady Brassey's last voyage. She died before completing the cruise and her grieving husband, Lord Brassey, completed her work for publication. Lord Brassey later authorised this edition, translated into French by Gaston Bonnefont. The many fine plates and illustrations are after designs by R.T. Pritchett, and engraved by Whymper, Cooper and Pearson. There are too many to comment on - more than two hundred in total - but the work is particularly rich with nautical scenes, as well as charming vignettes ranging from street… Read More

Description:
London: T. Nelson & Sons, 1937. A contribution based chiefly on a study of the Black-Headed Gull. "The Black-headed Gull owes its name to its hood. As the hood is brown, although it may seem black from a distance, the name is not happily chosen. It stresses, moreover, a feature that serves as identification mark in the breeding season only. Outside the breeding season the bird's head is white, with a few dark flacks. A better means of recogition, present at all seasons, is the red legs and beak... The assumption kept in view throughout the book is that the gull, and birds in general, have a mind as well as a body." Quarto, bound in dark blue cloth boards with gilt title, 232 pages, photographic illustrations, stamped 'Wellington College Natural History Society', a very good copy.

Description:
Sydney: Angus & Robertson, 1933. First Edition. OUTHWAITE, Ida Rentoul. Rare first edition with original dust jacket. Verse and illustration by Ida Rentoul Outhwaite. A dramatic stylistic shift from her body of work up until this point, Ouhtwaite's "Bunch of Wild Flowers" follows in the tradition of Margaret Tarrant and Cicely Mary Baker's little books of poetry illustrated with "flower fairies." Small quarto, six tipped colour plates, line drawings; original decorated papered boards; endpapers foxed, head of spine a little browned, a fine copy nonetheless in a rubbed dust-jacket that has sustained some loss of the rear panel.

Denmark, 1880. Very good. Charming children's exercise book with engraved illustrated covers depicting a group of five kangaroos titled "Kaempekaenguru". This idyllic bushland scene, complete with a joey and its mother and two emus in the distance, comprises the entire rear cover of the booklet (a serene contrast to the front cover depicting a group of hyenas fighting over a kill). Both engraved covers are signed "F. Specht"; Friedrich Specht (1839-1909) was a German natural history illustrator who produced images for both popular and scientific publications. Slim lined booklet, writing exercises completed in a cursive hand, original decorated wrapperss, very good.

Description:
Paris: Noel aîné, 1827. A splendid collection of expressive coloured lithographs depicting the animals of the world. This attractive album includes the entire run of 41 consecutive separately-issued plates; at which point, despite the charm and quality of the scenes, the publisher seems to have closed the series, making this a rare collection, and all the more impressive given that even individual plates are uncommon. Colour lithography did not have its full flowering as a medium for printed illustration until adopted by Paris publishers in the 1820s: this album thus dates from the infancy of the truly commercial process, which may also explain the individual rarity of the plates. Because it was never formally completed, no title-page nor accompanying letterpress for the series was produced, though the title ‘Collection d'Animaux' appears in the publisher's 1827 catalogue of plates available for individual purchase (at a franc each, or 75 centimes uncoloured). The images were produced by… Read More

London: The Tyron Gallery, 1971. A remarkably beautiful book by one of the most celebrated modern flower painters, printed by the Curwen Press and published in an edition of only 406 numbered and signed copies. As Sir George Taylor explains in his Note, the book began because "I had long thought that Paul Jones could paint very successfully a series of pictures in a modern version of The Temple of Flora [for an exhibition]... His pictures, which included the 'Datura', the frontispiece of this book, were greatly admired, and encouraged by this we then planned this present book..." Description:
Berlin: Carl Friedrich Amelang, 1821. A beautiful work for the education of the young. The fine large coloured plates in the atlas depict mammals (including the kangaroo), birds, amphibians, fish, and insects, as well as botany and minerals. The images were drawn from nature by Georg Bretzing, Ludwig Meyer, Muller and Weber, and engraved by Bretzing, Guimpel, Meno Haas, Friedrich Wilhelm Meyer, Ludwig Meyer, Tissot and Wachsmann. This delightful assembly was the work of the reformist theologian Friedrich Philipp Wilmsen (1770-1831), a pastor in Berlin who was both friend and confessor to the great composer Felix Mendelssohn. Wilmsen was an enthusiastic writer of works for the young across a wide range of subjects, partly influenced by Swiss theologians including Johann Jakob Hesse who had begun a tradition of writing indigenous Bible stories for Swiss children characterised by a religious tolerance and teaching across all economic divides. The comprehensive texts cite references to Lichtenstein,… Read More

Description:
Leipzig: Bibliographisches Institut, 1904. First edition of this famous and marvelous work by German biologist, Ernst Haeckel (1834 -1919). At the start of the twentieth century, 'Kunst-Formen der Natur' had a considerable influence on decorative design in the art nouveau period depicting fantastic, real forms and structures found in animal and plant life. Kunst-Formen der Natur" (English: "Art Forms in Nature") is a publication that showcases a collection of intricate illustrations of various organisms, primarily marine lifeforms. It is considered a landmark work in the field of biological illustration and art. The publication was created by the German biologist and artist Ernst Haeckel. Haeckel was renowned for his contributions to the fields of biology, evolutionary theory, and natural philosophy. He had a keen interest in the aesthetics of nature and believed that art and science could coexist harmoniously. "Kunst-Formen der Natur" was first published in 1899 as a portfolio of 100 lithographic… Read More

Description:
Paris: G. Steinheil (Éditeur), 1892. First Edition. Author, Adrien Loir, was assistant to the world reknowned French scientist, Louis Pasteur. Loir travelled to Australia in 1888 on a ship called the 'Cuzco'. "The Pasteur Institute undertook significant work in Australia during the late 1800s. Pasteur and his colleagues attempted to curb the growing rabbit population (unsuccessfully). However, they were successful in developing several other vaccines, including one for the dreaded disease Anthrax... In his thesis titled 'La Microbiologie en Australie', Loir points out that there was strong opposition to the destruction of rabbits from the graziers, who had identified damage caused by rabbits as a justification for claims to reduce the Government rent on the land. Loir also explains that the political climate in Australia was such that the reluctance to see the Pasteur Mission succeed was virtually unanimous. Finally, the make-up of the Rabbit Commission itself was, in Loir's opinion, enough to… Read More
