Description:
This book is in very good condition. There is little to no wear on the dust jacket. There is no wear on the cover boards. The front end page is signed and dedicated to the previous owners. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "`It may be that I am growing old in this world and have used up more than my share of allotted words and eager audiences. Or maybe I am just growing weary of a skeptical age that pokes and prods at my story much the same as a middle-school biology student pokes and prods through an anesthetize frog to determine what makes it live, leaving the poor creature dead in the end. Whatever the reason, I find that with each passing Christmas the story of the Christmas Box is told less and needed more...." - Chapter 1: The Widow's Mansion from The Christmas Box

Description:
Near fine book condition with no dust jacket. First Edition Thus. Brown pictorial boards, 207 pages. Woweee! What a challenge: What a villain! What a book! A $100,000 retainer persuades Nero Wolfe to take on the most elusive opponent of his career--none other than the untouchables of the F.B.I. His sweet little old public-spirited rich lady client has sent ten thousand copies of FBI NOBODY KNOWS (kind of a Naked Society's G-string) to people in high places and now finds herself the victim of a Big-Brother type persecution. Wolfe is hired to stop it. But the FBEye is everywhere so how? We'll never tell. So read it.

Description:
This book is in good condition. The cover boards have some wear on the front and back and the spine. The edges are worn and the corners are bumped. There are markings on the front end cover page, but the rest of the pages are clean. The pages are tanned and yellowed. The binding is tight and solid. "One always feels that Mr. Stout is having fun with his Nero Wolfe and Archie, but never has it been more apparent than in this complicated but easily followed tale. Its a story of sleuthing, harassment, murder, the FBI -very especially the FBI - and the police, with the usual delicious decor of orchids, fine foods, and happily unconventional and pungent dialogue. Almost everybody's role is unexpectedly askew and you don't see how they can all possibly get their deserts, but they do, convincingly and rather hilariously." - Harper's Books in Brief, December 1965

"The estate of Castlewood, in Virginia, which was given to our ancestors by King Charles the First, as some return for the sacrifices made in His Majesty's cause by the Esmond family, lies in Westmoreland county, between the rivers Potomac and Rappahannoe, and was once as great as an English Principality, though in the early times its revenues were but small. Indeed, for near eighty years after our forefathers possessed them, our plantations were in the hands of factors, who enriched themselves one after another, though a few scores of hogsheads of tobacco were all the produce that, for long after the Restoration, our family… Read More

"When, after thirty years, Henrietta Blackwell returned to Great Island, garlanded in her private grief, she was still a remarkably beautiful woman and something of a legend. The boatman's eyes had gone to her un-ringed left hand, the moment she stepped onto his deck, and he had called her 'Miss Henrietta' until the servant Rosa, blowing about in a small, fierce tempest, had rebuked him with assorted languages. He had shrugged and substituted 'Madam Bryce' though he knew as well as all the island did that the title was a polite fiction and that the elopement of three decades past had never been blessed by Church nor approved by Law...." - Chapter One from… Read More

That's what folks called the oppressive temperatures that July in Texas, on the fifth day of the year's major heat wave. Unless major efforts to irrigate were underway, you could not find a spot anywhere that held any moisture. Not the time to be working on a hot tar roof. In this torrid condition no one felt like exerting any unnecessary energy. But, at five-thirty we still gathered, as we did most every sunny day, at the icehouse on Big Joshua Creek. It had been in operation since 1927, when my grandfather set down roots in Comal County at the verge of the Hill Country. As the name implies, Granddad started out selling ice in big blocks, out of the two huge walk-in coolers in the back. Sometime in the… Read More

" She had been allowed to come out to the royal flagship, and had been eating cherries and strawberries dipped in wine. All round her the sea was a flaming white glitter, the air was hot high summer, the wind in a mad mood; she was twelve years old, and Tom Seymour, who was Admiral of the Fleet and her favourite step-uncle, was talking to her as though she were rather more; he was joking and chaffing her, but then he did that with all women, even with the Queen...." - Chapter One from Young Bess
