Description:
A fine archive of three original drawings by the English "mouth artist" John Carter, two letters by his biographer, a copy of the revised edition of Carter's Memoir, and related materials. A fine collection of three original drawings by John Carter (31 July 1815 - 2 June 1850), an English mouth artist, together with a memoir and two autograph letters discussing Carter's work by William James Dampier, Carter's first biographer. The collection also includes a heliotype after a drawing by Carter as well as a list of subscribers to Dampier's memoir. The small collection was apparently presented by Dampier to one of his friends. Original drawings by carter are rare, as most "of his work, now widely dispersed and probably unrecognized, is of course only known from nineteenth century reproductions" (Trevor Disley) John Carter was born in Coggeshall, Essex, "of humble parents", as Dampier notes. At school "he showed a disposition to scribble the figure of a man, a horse, or a bird, upon his desk or copy…

Description:
London: Wyman and Sons, 1895. From the Bart Auerbach Collection. Corners bumped, some light staining and wear to binding, intermittent foxing. 4to. 16 plates by G. J. Pinwell and J. North. Original quarter green morocco, red cloth, gilt-lettered on front cover. First edition. The dedication copy, inscribed by co-author Harry Quilter to dedicatee Maria Theresa Earle on the front flyleaf: "Maria Theresa Earle with the Author's Kind Regards. May 1895." The printed dedication reads: "To Maria Theresa Earle, in Memory of a Certain Day at Deschamps Gallery in the Year 1876, these Notes are Dedicated by the Author." The work typically appears in wrappers, and therefore this is presumably a gift binding made for the dedicatee. Mason (1818-1872) was considered one of the greatest of the idyllic painters of England. Pinwell (1842-1875) was also a member of the Idyllic School and excelled at drawing on wood for book illustration.

The lawyer, art collector, author and critic Arthur Jerome Eddy was a key figure in the first generation of Modern Art collectors. This, his most important book, is the first American work to promote these artists, and the first work to promote Wassily Kandinsky. Much of the information in the book was gained from the artists themselves, as Eddy was actively studying and collecting their works. Kandinsky had only been represented by one painting in the Armory Show the previous year: four are illustrated here ('Village Street'; Landscape…
