Description:
N.p.: N.p., 1940. Archive of 20 stunning oversized photographs of Buick auto dealerships in Minneapolis, MN, circa 1940s, all owned and operated by the W.R. Stephens Company. Each photograph mounted on board, with the stamp of photographer George Miles Ryan on the verso, and all but five with his name in manuscript pencil to the rectos of the boards, just below the lower right of each photograph. Photographs in the archive include images of the exteriors of three different dealerships, cars parked in lots, garages, showroom floors, service centers, interior spaces, including waiting areas, offices, a secretary pool, and employee cafeteria, occasionally with employees going about their day. Ryan worked primarily as a commercial photographer in the Minneapolis area, operating his own studio for roughly 40 years, and it seems likely these photographs were taken for use by the Stephens dealerships, either as artwork or for promotional material. Photographs roughly 13.5 x 10.5 inches, mounted to 16 x… Read More

Description:
N.p.: N.p., 1968. Archive of 46 vintage vernacular photographs of a model airliner in wind tunnel tests, circa 1967-1968. All photographs with an internal reference number, printed from the negative, on the lower right of the image. The photographs on offer are almost certainly internally-produced reference photographs taken during the development of Boeing's 747 airliner, and were likely taken at Boeing's Seattle wind tunnel model shop. Development of the world's first twin-aisle airliner, Boeing's 747, began in 1965 under the supervision of Malcolm T. Stamper, then head of Boeing's turbine division (and later Boeing's longest serving president). Engineer Joe Sutter, commonly known as "the father of the 747," headed the design team, and in 1966, aerospace manufacturer Pratt and Whitney developed the JT9D, the first high-bypass-ratio turbofan engine powerful enough for the wide-body airliner. The first 747 was rolled out of Boeing's custom-built Everett Plant on September 20, 1968, and on February… Read More

Description:
N.p.: N.p., 1937. Binder of vintage photographs compiled by Mary Norris, a nursing student at Evangelical Deaconess Hospital in Marshalltown, Iowa, circa 1937. The photographs provide a detailed visual account, with notations throughout, of her time at the Hospital as a student nurse in training. Included are over 100 vernacular photographs, generally featuring classmates, professors, doctors, and her fiance, Donald Malcolm, and their friends in posed shots, several detailed autograph letters signed from Malcolm, and over a dozen typed or handwritten poems, presumably by Norris, predominantly on the themes of nursing and religion. Also included are invitations to social events, mementos, clipped newspaper articles, and pamphlets or other ephemera regarding her classwork. Taken together these form a detailed and highly specific account of the life of a nursing student just prior to World Word II. The Evangelical Deaconess Hospital, along with the attached nursing school, opened in 1914. It was just… Read More

Description:
N.p.: N.p., 1970. Archive of 288 vernacular color photographs of country music acts from the 1970s, housed in a contemporary photo album, with the subject of nearly every photograph identified by manuscript ink captions. Occasional additional notations give a date range between 1972-1980 for the photographs, with most being dated 1977-1979. The photographs primarily consist of performers on stage, indicating the photographer was near the stage, with a strong sense of composition and timing. Photographs of performers casually posing for the camera indicate the photographer likely had backstage access for some of the performances. Based on additional information in some of the handwritten captions, the photographs were primarily taken at concerts or events in the Western New York region, - Chautauqua, Dunkirk, Little Valley, and Lakewood - all within an hour of each other, as well as the nearby Erie County (NY) Fair and Expo, and Pittsfield, PA. Other locations include the New York State Fair and… Read More

Description:
N.p.: N.p., 1940. Archive of 59 photographs of automobile accident scenes or damage to vehicles in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area, circa late 1930s through late 1940s. All photographs with manuscript annotations to the rectos or versos, or stamps on the verso, indicating their use in legal proceedings, and occasionally with dates or locations. Also included is a brown paper envelope with the stamp of photographer R. Werner and the District Court of Dakota County, MN regarding a hearing on May 16, 1939. Massachusetts became the first state to pass mandatory auto insurance laws in 1927, but it wouldn't be until 1956 that other states began to follow suit. However, the stamps indicate the photographs were used as evidence in civil cases, as several are stamped "plaintiff," rather than "prosecution." An interesting look at the early days of automotive liability actions, just before car ownership would skyrocket in America during the 1950s. Photographs variously sized, between 4.5 x 2.75 and 10 x… Read More

1967. Archive of eight vintage borderless photographs, three typescript essays, and a carbon typescript of the first essay and first page of the second, by photographer Jerry Bauer, circa 1967, with the photographs corresponding to the topics of the essays. Bauer was an American photographer best known for his photographic portraits of writers, with his portraits of Samuel Beckett being held in particularly high regard. Much of his work resides in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London. The first essay, "The American Underground: Mind Expansion, A Messiah, 'Love'," is an examination of Timothy Leary and the "League for Spiritual Discovery" (LSD), a communal organization carrying out studies in the religious use of psychedelic drugs, as well as the effects of LSD. Two photographs are of the New York Millbrook estate, mentioned in the essay, one of the centers for the group, one photograph of the estate itself, and the other of two participants on the porch. Woodstock, NY: N.p., 1969. Archive of promotional materials from the Woodstock rock festival, including a bifold brochure advertising the festival's original dates (August 15-17) with two flyers for "Inflatatent" and the third day of the festival laid in, a small blue pin with the festival's logo designed by Arnold Skolnick, and several cards with manuscript ink annotations noting the names and contact information of festival organizers. Also included in the archive is the 1969 special issue of RAT Subterranean News which was distributed for free at the festival. Woodstock was organized by promoters Michael Lang, Artie Kornfeld, Joel Rosenman, and John P. Roberts. The festival, initially planned for August 15, 16, and 17 in Wallkill, NY, had a predicted audience of approximately 50,000 people, leaving the organizers woefully unprepared for the 400,000 attendants who showed up for the event. N.p.: N.p., 1988. Archive of 120 vernacular borderless color snapshot photographs of the Detroit Grand Prix, taken in 1986, 1987, and 1988. In the summer of 1982, the US became the first country to host three World Championship Grands Prix in one season, with the older Grand Prix West races in Long Beach and Las Vegas joined by the newly established Detroit Grand Prix in Michigan, near the General Motors headquarters. The Detroit race continued to be held annually for the next six years, in spite of its growing reputation for its narrow, bumpy track (a result of the race taking place on a closed street course in downtown Detroit) and typically hot, humid weather. These factors would ultimately push FISA to declare the track unsafe, ending the circuit's affiliation with Formula One in 1988, to be replaced by the CART-sanctioned Detroit Indy Grand Prix the following year. The photographs in the archive document an attendee's perspective of the races from 1986-1988, won all three years by Brazilian… Read More
