Dedication Copy, INSCRIBED by the author to the book's dedicatee, writer and environmental activist Robert Easton, on the dedication page a month prior to publication: "King Kondor! / and a man I consider myself fortunate to know / Ken / Santa Barbara / December 1965." Easton and Kenneth Millar were longtime friends and Santa Barbara residents. Millar's inscription refers to their shared efforts in the mid-1960s to save the California condor, a species native to the Santa Barbara mountains that was nearing extinction in 1964. Millar would write the foreword to Easton's 1972 book "Black Tide," an exposé of the consequences of oil drilling on the California coastline. The thirteenth Lew Archer novel. Description:
New York: Crown Publishers, 1972. First hardcover edition, preceded by a paperback original published by Chicago Paperback House in 1962. INSCRIBED by the author on the front endpaper, with typical dry wit: "To Palmer [and] Marge Carlson - / Your determination in getting this book almost-almost-matches Frank Mansfield's. My warmest personal regards. Yours, / Charles Willeford / 17 Feb 1973." Scarce signed. The "Frank Mansfield" to whom Willeford refers is the narrator of "Cockfighter," a disgraced gamecock trainer who has taken a vow of silence (which, at the start of the novel, has lasted over two years) until he wins the elusive Cockfighter of the Year Award. The author's uncommon second hardcover title. New York: Macaulay, 1939. First Edition. First Edition. Association copy, INSCRIBED by the author in the year and month of publication to fellow screenwriter Walter C. Roberts: "January 3rd 1939 / To Walter C. Roberts / In friendship and as a belated Xmas gift. / Your friend / Martin M. Goldsmith." With the front panel and front flap of the excessively rare dust jacket tipped onto the rear endpapers, presumably by Roberts, and Roberts' bookplate and manuscript ink name and Paramount Pictures address noted on the front pastedown. Walter C. Roberts was a dialogue director for Paramount beginning in the 1930s, working mostly uncredited on Westerns and war movies, his most important known credit being his work on the revisionist Western "Warlock" in 1959. One of the rarest film noir source books, and among the earliest inscriptions we have ever encountered, having only seen one other dated in the month of publication.
