Description:
N.p.: N.p., 1890. Archive of 46 vintage photographs documenting damages and repair work along the New Orleans and Northeastern Railroad (NONE) in Louisiana and Mississippi after a flood. Photographs taken on a No. 2 Kodak box camera, produced from 1889 to 1897, and dating the archive to the late 19th century. NONE was incorporated in Louisiana in 1868 and in Mississippi in 1871, originally called the Mandeville and Sulphur Springs Railroad, before changing its name in 1870. Although preliminary surveys were completed in 1871 and 1872, a severe depression delayed the track's construction, and the company land lay empty until the railroad was acquired by the Alabama, New Orleans, Texas, and Pacific Junction Railways Company in 1881. The line would open in 1883, extending 196 miles from New Orleans to Meridian, Mississippi, and traveling through towns such as Slidell and Little Woods, Louisiana, as well as over Pearl River and Lake Pontchartrain. As a whole the photographs are bright and… Read More

Description:
N.p.: N.p., 1970. Archive of 32 vintage photographs documenting the October 20, 1970 collision of two trains along the Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific Railroad line in Raytown, Missouri. Also included in the archive is a single broadside reward poster offering $5000 for information pertaining to the accident. According to a contemporary newspaper article which appeared in nearby Jackson County's Independence Examiner, the accident was believed to have been caused by juvenile vandalism to a nearby track switch. The collision and subsequent derailment resulted in the death of one engineer, whose partial body is visible in several photographs. The photographs in the archive range from close-up shots of the mangled train cars and tracks to distance views of the surrounding woods. Frequently displayed in the images is a small, handwritten police chalkboard noting the date, location, and case numbers. A vivid and interesting look at investigative photography and railway disasters in the late… Read More

Beverly Hills, CA: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM], 1929. Draft script for the 1929 silent film. Manuscript pencil annotations throughout by an unknown editor, with an unsigned typescript note of revisions to producer Hunt Stromberg bound in at the front of the script. Lon Chaney's penultimate film appearance, and his last silent film, as he would develop walking pneumonia during the film's production which, when combined with his throat cancer, lead to his death two months later, after the release of his final film "The Unholy Three (1930)." Now considered a lost film, as only one reel is known to have survived. Chaney plays a railroad engineer who is obsessed with running his train on time, to the degree that he causes several tragedies and is ostracized from his family. Set in Illinois, shot on location in Wisconsin. Blue titled wrappers, rubber-stamped copy No. 12318 and production No. 1713, dated Feb. 5, 1929, with credits for screenwriters Byron Morgan and Ann Price. Title page integral with… Read More

Description:
Boston: Self published, 1902. Collection of eight original dry plate glass negatives featuring images of Boston and New York area trolleys, circa 1902-1914 but developed shortly after, shot and struck by photographer Paul W. Rowell, with his last name in manuscript pencil on a few of the accompanying manila envelopes. Each slide with identifying annotations etched prior to development, and housed in original manila envelope, with "No.," "Name," and "Remarks" printed on one side, most of these sections filled with annotations and dates in manuscript pencil, three with "Trolley Interior" in manuscript red ink. Little is known of Rowell, but he was advertising his services in New York photography publications as late as 1884, and moved to Massachusetts a decade later. Aside from his photography he was an accomplished painter, and his paintings have turned up at auction while his photography remains mostly unknown. Here, his steadfast vision of a trolley is presented almost always in glowing natural… Read More
