Near fine. 489 pages [*4,B4-Rrr4], 25 1/2 x 21 cm. 4to, six copperplate engravings (4 folding), and one folding table. A French botanist and engineer, Duhamel was probably the first to distinguish clearly between alkalis, potash and soda. His continuing energy in experiments in vegetable physiology gained him admission to the Academy in 1728. This work contains translations by John Mills of his "Traite de la Culture des Terres," as well as contributions by others. Index. KRESS 6014. Bright, clean copy, title page printed in red and black, light age-toning, raised bands, red leather spine label printed in gilt, ownership inscription in contemporary hand.
