This copy with an inscription from Berryman: "To M. R. (?) Mucke / w. every good wish / J. Berryman / Mpls. / 15 Apr 65." Berryman's Pulitzer Prize-winning long poem. Stefanik 11.1.a.

Rathman's first book printed at Vermillion Editions under the guidance of Steve Anderson. Gerald Lange of the Bieler Press and Norman Fritzberg of the Hansestadt Letterfoundry were responsible for the typographic design and composition. The portfolios were constructed by the Campbell-Logan Bindery. A check-list [1473-1926] compiled by Wilberforce Eames, New York: privately printed by William E. Rudge's Sons, 1938. Together 3 volumes, folio, edition limited to 200 copies, numerous facsimiles throughout, a fine set in orig. black cloth gilt, t.e.g., first two volumes in the publisher's box. Jones (1861-1928) bought The Minneapolis Journal in 1908 and he remained associated with that paper for the rest of his life. He is perhaps best remembered, however, as a bibliophile, and among other collections, assembled one of the greatest collections of Americana ever, here memorialized and described in detail.

Edition limited to "100 possible copies" (in fact, only 88 were made, each numbered and signed by Schanilec), oblong 4to, being a series of 7 unbound oblong, frenchfold bifolia, each 9" x 12", 2 of them folding color wood engravings (each 18" x 24"), 1 with a tipped-in printed leaf within; another full-page color wood engraving, and wood engraved initials, printed in red, blue, black and orange throughout, the whole in a custom folding black chitsu case by Studio Alcyon, lined with red cloth and incorporating inside the back cover an enclosed redux title leaf. The text and illustrations are a poignant and pointed menagerie of Schanilec's poetry, political satire, historiography, the tragic death of George Floyd and millions more of Covid-19. Special appearances by Amanda Gorman, John B. McLemore, and the U.S. Constitution. Surely, even at this early date, a masterwork emanating from the reign of Donald Trump and the global pandemic.

Includes the original Act to Incorporate, Constitution, By-Laws, list of members, and the text of an address by Minnesota's first historian, the Rev. Edward D. Simpson's talk concerns an expedition into Navajo country made in 1849 by Col. Jno. M. Washington to coerce the Navajos into compliance with a treaty made with the United States. Simpson accompanied the expedition and makes many observations on the land and people. Other articles include G. H. Pond on Indian mounds, T. M. Fullerton on the St. Louis River, Edward D. Neill on the history of early trade in the state, the battle of Lake Pokeguma [sic] as narrated by an "eye-witness." Of particular note are the extracts of the daily journal of W. T. Boutwell as he accompanied Schoolcraft on his 1832 expedition to the headwaters of the Mississippi. Minnesota Imprints 47; Sabin 49274.

St. Louis: Jams R. Albach, 1851. Second edition, revised and enlarged, thick 8vo, pp. 818; bookplate of James J. Hill, presentation from the son of the author, inscribed "James J. Hill from Charles E. Perkins Oct. 25 1889"; full contemporary sheep, morocco label on spine; top of spine chipped away, joints tender, perforated Hill Library stamp in title. Howes P231 showing this to be the fourth printing and noting that "Albach was the actual compiler" and Perkins the "competent editor."

These annals explain the origin of the name Minnesota and include Governor Alexander Ramsey's address that traces the history of the Sioux and Chippewa tribes in the territory.
