Not many parents today would send their children to do the shopping, and then be okay when their kids provide their home address to the grocery clerk in order to win a prize. Well, that's what happens, and it's sweet. The "funny door" is a door that opens automatically, quite the new experience for the boy.

First edition, signed by Lynd Ward on blank preliminary page, price of $2.75 present on front flap, date on title page, 4to, 85 pages, alternating pages of text and illustrations throughout; spine ends a touch pushed, dust jacket edge worn with a couple of tiny tears at top edge and one half inch chip out at head of spine, gold award sticker on front cover. This was Lynd Ward's first book as both author and illustrator, and it earned him the 1953 Caldecott Medal. With scant text, the pictures tell most of the story, and tell it well. Ward created the illustrations with casein paint, an ancient milk based medium, and the resulting images are soft and inky, and richly detailed. The book represents long-standing relationships between people and animals on many levels, while painting a picture of a beautiful friendship.

Bimbo is a little circus monkey who has his favorite jacket stolen by the circus strongman. He asks all of his animal friends for help getting it back but none can help him. Finally, it is the pretty rope walker who shames the strongman into returning it.

This charming vintage copy 'Birds: Observations of Bird Life' is written by naturalist, lecturer, and founder of the Audubon Society in Ohio, Frank North Shankland. Illustrated with eight full page pieces depicting birds in their natural habitat by beloved children's book illustrator, Fern Bisel Peat. Fern's children's book illustration career began with this very publisher, when she was painting a mural in Akron, and an editor from Saalfield Publishing introduced herself and asked if Fern would be interested in working on children's books. The rest is history, and this charming tome is a piece of it.
