Author was supporter of the South: "My heart was with the South because I came on my mother's side of a West Indian family - and a slave-owning family - ruined by the Abolition of Slavery in the British Colonies; and although I know perfectly well that I was altogether wrong in what I wrote politically concerning 'America in the Midst of War,' my heart is still in the South." .
