A history and personal memoir of the 104th Squadron during the First World War covering 1917-1919. This copy (I assume originally a paperback? ) has been bound into green shiny boards (I presume by the former owner? ). No titling to the boards, but the book is in a clear library dustjacket into which the original red wraps (with black titling /black biplane decoration) have been put, simulating a d/j.. As it has been bound as a hardcover by ? ( ? Binder/former owner ? ) - the wraps are somewhat smaller than the boards - but this 'pseudo d/j' does enhance its appearance - in my opinion. Blue Boards fair only, complete but titling all but disappeared to the spine, and a former owner has decided to 'improve' this book by colouring in the faded edges of boards. Corners and head/tail of spine lightly 'bumped'. Rear edge of the spine splitting, but holding fast. There is a circular stain on the back board and the publishers blind stamped logo. Extremeties rubbed. Internally generally very clean, but a few blind stamps on few pages including title page, (Bradford Library and Literary Society). No other indications of this having been in a library. Top page edge discoloured, the remaining page edges are browned/dusty. Previous owners inscription on the front free e/p. In the original attractive pictorial and blind stamped blue morocco-grain cloth, with gilt titling and decoration to the spine, and a gilt illustration / part title to the front cover. The design is by John Leighton. Signed "JL" in gold as a monogram at the base of the vignette in the base foliage. The head/tail and corners of the book are 'soft' and rubbed, with a little light fraying, as are the edges, and some of the gilt is wearing away on the centre of the illustration. Small slits/tears to the top and bottom edges of both sides of the spine, but overall a very sound and attractive copy. Despite the small splits in the outer cloth as noted, ALL Hinges are tight - outer and inner. ALL fore-edges gilt. The former owners' name and date (21st Oct /17) are in old ink near the top right corner of the front cover.
