Description:
1846. Browne, Hablot K.. [a handsome set] Wholesale, Retail, and for Exportation. With Illustrations by H.K. Browne. [In 20-in-19 monthly serial parts.] London: Bradbury & Evans, 1846-1848. Original light blue-green pictorial wrappers. First Edition, as issued in 20-in-19 monthly serial parts beginning in October 1846 and ending in April 1848. The serialization of this novel began upon the end of serialization of OLIVER TWIST (the scarcest of all "Dickens in parts," occurring eight years after its publication in book form); until OLIVER TWIST these monthly parts of Dickens's works were issued by Chapman & Hall, but were now being issued by Bradbury & Evans. Part XVIII of DOMBEY AND SON includes the first so-called "dark plate" (appropriately, "On the dark Road") to appear in a Dickens work -- possible due to a new process; there would be another in DAVID COPPERFIELD, followed by ten in BLEAK HOUSE and eight in LITTLE DORRIT. At the end of serialization, DOMBEY AND SON was published in book form --… Read More

Description:
1868. With Illustrations by Marcus Stone. London: Virtue & Company, October 17 [1868] - May 22 [1869]. Original grey-green pictorial wrappers printed in red and black. An incomplete set of the First Edition, 24 of the 32 weekly parts (serialization was also available in eight monthly parts, and at the end the novel was issued in two volumes). The publisher Virtue gave Trollope extremely generous terms in order to be able to publish this novel -- too generous: Virtue "went under" after the 29th part, after which Strahan & Co. picked up the remainder. (Hence the lack of inserted ads in the last three numbers, Strahan's name on those three inside-rear wrappers, and Strahan's name on the book title pages included in the last part.) Included are two plates by Marcus Stone per part, plus, at the end of the final part, the preliminary leaves for both volumes -- for those buyers who wanted to have their parts bound up. The eight parts that are lacking from this set are 8, 10, 12, 20, 22, 24, 25 and 26; of… Read More

Description:
1930. [complete in 7 magazine issues] A Novel. Illustrated by F.R. Gruger. In: The American Magazine. Springfield Ohio: The Crowell Publishing Company, April-October 1930 [together, seven issues]. Original color pictorial wrappers. First American Appearance of this historical romance, complete in these seven consecutive issues of The American Magazine, where the novel is illustrated by F.R. Gruger -- some full-page, some even double-page. It was in 1930 that the tale was also published in book form -- by Houghton Mifflin in the US and by Hutchinson (as THE MINION) in the UK. Condition is remarkably very good-plus (minor edge-wear, especially at the ends of the spines). The lower corner of all seven front covers bears the original mailing label -- which, amazingly, went to six different people! -- two in Illinois, plus one each in Maine, Massachusetts, North Dakota and Wisconsin. Quite a survival.

Description:
1919. Being a Plain History of Life and Mankind. London: George Newnes, [Nov 1919 - Nov 1920]. Original color pictorial wrappers. First Appearance of this grandiose work, in the 24 fortnightly wrappered parts as originally issued. [Wells] and his friends on the League of Nations committee had discussed textbooks and methods of education, as a way of preventing further wars, but... they refused, on the grounds of lack of time, lack of formal preparation, and unwillingness to give the effort. Wells decided that he must do it himself. He and Jane agreed to take a year to research, formulate, and write a book designed to replace the histories then available. It was a remarkable gamble. The income from Wells's past writing would inevitably dry up during such a year. The boys were still at school and in university,... [and] Wells was responsible for the care and education of his child by Rebecca West... So, late in 1918, about Christmas, H.G. and Jane sat down to begin work on what would be one of the… Read More
