Contemporary half cloth (discoloured; top of rear joint slightly worn), spine gilt lettered (faded). With 2 engraved title-pages and 2 wood engraved portraits (Herman Boerhaave & J.B. van Helmont). Quite rare. The portrait of Boerhaave engraved by Hendricks after H. Brown seems not to be described elswhere (Burgess, etc.). -- Encyclopédie Populaire Série 6.

With numerous illustrations in the text and 2 coloured advertisements for Ciba medicines. ¶ A usefull introduction to the history of aviation medicine in 4 articles: 1) Discovery of the Balloon; 2) Origin of Aviation Medicine (Paul Bert a.o.); 3) Aviation Medicine in the A.E.F.; 4) Avaition Medicine in America, Ar-Marks 1903-1943; 50 Bibliographic Notes.- (Ciba Symposia, Vol. 5, #9).

Original printed boards (dust soiled, worn and damaged in places; slightly loose in binding). ¶ A quite remarkable and original work. Coincidentally written in the spirit of Corvisart's 'éducation médicale des sens'. Suringar, professor at Leiden, was an excellent clinician and outstanding teacher. His medico-historico contributions are of lasting value, especially his history of medical education at the Leiden University.

Paris,: Méquignon,, 1784.. 496, [vi, publ. cat. + Extrait des Régistres de la Soc. Roy. de Méd.] pp.12m0 (10,5 x 17 cm.). Contemporary full calf, spine with 5 raised bands, gilt lettered and gilt floral decorations in compartments (front joint broken; sides have quite some loss of leather). With a fine engraved portait of Lorry by Aug. de St. Aubin after a drawing by C.N. Cochin. ** Rare. Lorry is considered as the father of French dermatology. This is his last work, published posthumously by Jean-Noël Hallé (1754-1822). -- (Some scattered foxing; uper margin of the last 20 pages sligthly waterstained; a mediocre copy, priced accordingly).

Contemporary marbled calf, spine with raised bands and in compartments gilt floral decorations; gilt lettered orange morocco title shield, outer edges of sides with gilt ruller; edges red washed; mabled end-papers. Barbier I, 980. A very nice copy in an attractive and flawless 18th century binding, but for a very small piece gone from the upper left corner of the title shield. The first edition was published at Brussels (chez Jean Leonard) in 1742, a later edition was published in 1763 (Paris, d'Houry).-- (A few pages have a light clean waterstain or light browning).

Contempoarary half calf, spine gilt decorated and gilt lettered on orange morocco label (some slight rubbings; 2 small traces of rodent bites), marbled boards. With 5 folded engraved plates of which 4 very engravings of cinchona species. The second, much expanded, edition of Alibert's thesis, the founder of the modern French school of dermatology. A 5th. edition was published in 1819. Bayle/Thilay II, 935. "La Thèse inaugurale d'Alibert sur les 'Fièvres intermittentes perniceuses' eur un grand retentissement. Revue et complétée, elle obtint jusqu'a cinq éditions successives' (Dechambre). The first edition was published in 1800 and has only 159 pages and 1 plate.

Contemporary marbled calf, spine with raised bands and in compartments gilt (top & bottom of spine slightly damaged; hinges slightly worn, but firm; corners a bit bumped; title shield gone). With an engraved title vignet and some headings. ¶ The last part has a separate title page: CLARIUS ET MAJUS LUMEN PHARMACOPAEORUM Dat is een claerder en meerder licht der Apothekers. Alwaer wordt voor gestelt eene sekere maniere, hoe dat eenige Medicynen moeten bereyt gemaeckt worden, soo Galenicé, als Chimicé, alles met redenen bewesen dienende tot onderwysinge van de Leerlingen. With 8 lithographed plates, of which one, a sepia tinted plate of pearls, in a mezzotint manner, some figures in the text. ¶ A most interesting bi-weekly demonstrating the state of the art of experimental biology, surgery and some medicine. Comprises articles, reports, book reviews, etc. Some topics: anaesthesia, electricity, neuranatomy, cholera, orthopaedics, public health. To name but a few authors: Karl Ernst von Baer (Kaspische Studien), R. Virchow (Congentitale Nierenwassersucht, J. Dalton, O. Schmidt, J. Snow, Remak, Bretonneau, de Qutrefages, R. Lyon,: Aux Edition du Fleuve,, 1953-(1955).. 4 volumes. 407, [x]; 464, [ix]; 431, [ix]; 391, [i, blank], LV, [ix] pp. Large 8vo (17,5 x 26 cm.). Original printed wrappers, uncut and unopened. Preserved in the original double slipcase (slightly discoloured). Finely printed in red and black on "vélin Alfama filigrané des Papéteries du Marais" in 2000 numbered copies (here #1349). With facsimiles and book decorations throughout. A nice and clean copy of this classic. This text is based on the bilinguel edition published by in 1595 by the physician from Metz, Anuce Foés (1528-1595) which had numerous notes : its Greek text remains nearly exactly the same as it was in 1538, whereas its Latin translation is often retranslated. See Choulant, "Handbuch".

Paris,: Gabon & Crochard,, 1816. 2 volumes: [iv], xx, 648; [iv], 584 pp. 8vo (14 x 21,5 cm.). Contemporary blind wrappers (temporary binding, worn), entirely uncut (a la barbe). The greatest share in founding the Paris School (of clinical medicine)... fell to Broussais, a colourful Breton who had a wide influence... his "Histoire des Phlegmasies", which embodied much clinical material, and in which he set out his theory that many diseases are due to inflammation, especially of gastrointestinal tract... Broussais soon had a wide following in Paris" (Singer/Underwood 281ff). Broussais' ideas and person were subject to many polemics (i.a. Pinel) and ordinary quarrels, but his influence on the development of French medicine during the two decades following 1815 was very great. --(Scattered foxing and light browning).

Francofurti & Lipsiae,: Frid. Fleischer,, 1753.. [xviii], 334, [ii] pp. Small 8vo (11 x 18 cm.). Contemporary calf, spine with 4 raised ribs, in compartment gilt decorated; red morocco title label (gilt decoration somewhat faint; top of spine has some slight loss of leather owing to rodent bites, but a good copy); edges red spickeled. With a nice half-page amorial engraving by Rössler and a few woodcut head- and tail pieces. The rare first edition. A very popular work of which 17 editions have been published between 1753 and 1828 in 3 languages. Former owner inscription (L. Merlin) on title.

Leipzig,: J. F. Gleditschens sel. Sohn,, 1733.. [xx], 311, [i] pp. 12mo (8,5 x 3,5 cm.). Contemporary full overlapping vellum, title on spine. With one fine engraved frontispiece. ¶ This edition is very rare. Contains i.a. Von der Cholera - Sanguine - Phlegmate - Cholerico - Melancholicis, etc. --(As usual with German books from this period, pages light browned throughout the volume; though a attractive copy in a charming contemporary binding).

Groningen,: J.B. Wolters,, 1864.. xii, 636, [ii] pp. 8vo (15 x 23 cm.). 19th century half cloth (slightly worn), spine gilt lettered. With 6 lithographed plates of which 2 partly coloured.. ¶ Pagel, 1781. Vogel, assistant of Pfeufer (1853-55) and Prof. at Dorpat (1866) was a reputed peadiatrician. His "Lehrung der Kinderkrankheiten" (1860) counted at least 8 edition, and was translated into many languages. The Dutch edition is quite rare.¶

La Haye,: Henri Scheurleer,, 1734.. [ii, blank], [xii], 186, [xlvi], [ii, blank] pp. Small 8vo (10,5 x 16,5 cm.). Contemporary full marbled calf, spine with 5 raised bands, in compartments gilt tooled with floral ornaments, gilt lettered on a morocco label; marbled endpapers. A very nice copy. First edition of the French translation (The Ancient Physician's Legacy to his Country). Thomas Dover seem to be the only buccaneer-physician in the medical literature. He was best known as Dr. Quicksilver. At pages 20-21 we find the receipy for the famous 'Dover's Powder' (Opium and its derivates among others). The last 42 pages are: CATALOGUS LIBRORUM qui venales extant apud H. Scheurleer, Bibliop.... Rare, according to the Worldcat, only 4 copies held in libraries worldwide!

Strasbourg & Paris,: F.G. Levrault & Fuchs,, An V (1796-1797).. viii, 160, [ii] pp. 8vo (12.5 x 20 cm.). Contemporary half brown calf, spine gilt decorated with rulers and buttons, gilt lettered on orange morocco label, marbled boards, marbled edges. A rare and early detailed monograph on the subject. --(A few pages with some light damp staining and/or some foxing, but a very good copy).

A Paris,: Chez Laurent d'Houry,, 1698.. 4 parts in 2 volumes: (56), 333, (iii); (viii), 310, (xiv), 106, (iv) pp. Sm. 8vo. Contemporary calf, spine with raised bands, in compartment gilt lettered and decorated (partly worn at joints and corners). A good copy of this rare first French edition of Bontekoe's ‘Werken’, originally published in 1689 by S. Blankaart, who also wrote the biography of Bontekoe in the first volume (‘Abregé de la Vie’). Bontekoe, who’s real name was Dekker, was a famous cartesian, recommended the use of opium, the incessant smoking of tobacco, and the continual drinking of tea, or sometimes coffee, for health and prolonging life. He supported Sylvius' theory of acid and alkali. Rintelii (Rinteln),: Impressa typis Petri Lucii, Academiae Typographi,, [1665].. 12 pp. Small folio919 x 28,7 cm.). Modern blinds wrappers with new and-papers. With 2 woodcut initials, and 2 footers. ¶ Very rare Rinteln imprint of which only ONE COPY is known to exist. The University of Rinteln (1621-1819) was one of the first German Universities. --(Paper browne).

Amsterdam,: Vivat,, (1909).. [iv], 96 pp. Sm. 4to (17,5 x 22.5 cm.). With illustrations and 7 (some coloured or double-page) plates. ¶ Rare. Dummy. The prospectus and sample pages, together with the original illustrated cloth binder for a new issue (3rd) of "De Geneeskundige Raadsman bij Ziekten en Ongevallen". Preserved in a half leather binding (spine rubbed). Later edition of this work of medical vulgarization are 1941 & 1952. Apparently the only survived copy of this dummy.

Contemporary half brown marocco (partly slightly rubbed, spines discoloured), spines gilt lettered & numbered, marbled boards and endpapers. With 1 folded table & 1 lithographed plate. The original edition of the first work dealing exclusively with the diagnosis of early pulmonary tuberculosis". -- (Some scattered light foxing or browning, but a very good copy).

(Paris,: privately publsihed,, ca 1839).. 16 pp. 8vo (13 x 20 cm.). Later half cloh, marbled boards, spine gilt lettered. With the engraved exlibris of Henry Barton Jacobs. Very rare, no other copy recorded. Fournet's paper submitted in the contest for the Prix Monthyon. In it he pointed out some shortcoming in Laennec's "Auscultation". Most important Laennec knew only one sound: 'bruit respiratoire, Fournet distinguished two, 'bruit inspiratoire"and 'bruit expiratoire', a major step forward thus.
