Description:
(London,, n.d. ca. 1850). Steel engraving, image is 15,7 x 18,6 cm., the sheet is 22,7 x 29,7 cm. Hogarth's famous satirical copper engraving originally published in 1736 and here in a steel engraved reproduction of about 1850 (separated from one of the 19th century editions of his "complete works". "Hogarth's print shows both quacks and pretentious physicians in an amorial setting. The tree at the top of the print are Joshua Ward, perhaps the most famous quack of his time; Sara Mapp, a well-known bonesetter; and John Taylor the occulist. The bewigged physicians sniff the pomander on their canes, but as the legend notes: "Et plurima mortis imago" (And many are the faces of death). According to Hogarth, both physicians and quacks are in the same Company of Undertakers". (Helfand p. 81).
