Publisher's cream-colored buckram-style cloth with elaborate upper board gilt lettering and decorative device within double-ruled gilt border, 12mo, pp. 70. Tissue-guarded frontis of the author and 8 additional illustrations by E. H. Garrett inserted. Note that the List of Illustrations calls for the final illustration to be inserted at page 64 but it is at page 68. Top edge gilt. Leaves printed on rectos only. GOOD condition with shelf soiling on front and rear boards that shows more readily than if publisher had chosen a darker color. This copy with a nice sentimental gift inscription from one sister to another in the year of publication.

Originally in the publisher's gray printed wrappers, but rear wrapper now missing and front wrap holding by a thread and likely to separate with further handling. Wrapper spine mostly perished. Largely clean internally save for a few old tide lines at preliminary and terminal pages. String-binding holding sound. Lists of curators, professors, tutors, etc., 1771-date. Ensconced now by us in a clear new display sleeve with white card stock backing board.

Removed from Herring & Longacre, National Portrait Gallery of Distinguished Americans, Volume 1. An 8-page biography of Webster removed from the National Portrait Gallery volume and rebound separately in a variegated maroon leatherette with Webster's name gilt on front and the engraving of Webster from the large volume tipped in on a clean new endpaper. The slim resultant volume measures 11 by 7 inches. Condition is GOOD with foxing in the margins of the original leaves. For more on the National Portrait Gallery series, see Howes, H 443.

First edition, so stated, octavo, pp. 457, [1]. Illustrated endpapers. Color frontis and many other illustrations, perfect with the Table of Contents. Old bookseller ticket near bottom edge of rear pastedown. A FAIR only copy at best. Spine ends and board tips frayed and rubbed heavily. Lettering on spine and upper board worn away. Front hinge very tender. No dust jacket.

Publisher's reddish brown cloth with spine lettering gilt, now faded, octavo, pp. 78. Top edge gilt. Incomplete bookplate removal near top edge of front paste down. Previous owner name and 1901 notation from St. John, New Brunswick, on free front endpaper. Some black ink spots on upper board near top corner. Light shelf wear at spine ends and board tips. Some spots of foxing on preliminary pages. GOOD withal. See BAL 375.

Revised, octavo, pp. 349. A FAIR only copy in gray wrappers with perimeter tears and chips, soiling, and separation beginning at each end of the spine. Fore-edge and portions of the interior with old tide-lines. (see photos 2, 3, & 4). But to our mind, what makes this a desirable item is the large multi-panel fold-out chart found in the Appendix section. The chart, entitled "Qualifications Prescribed for Suffrage by the Constitutions of the Several States of the Union, 1912," obviously precedes the 15th Amendment by 8 years, so it is not surprising that women are not included here, but it is nevertheless quite striking to go down the left-hand "Requirements" column for each state and see only Male, Male, Male, Male, etc. The chart is in Very Good condition except for a short tear with no loss in the margin above the word "Maine," and a small tear with a tiny bit of text illegibility (see photos 5-8).

Publisher's original string-tied wrappers with title lettering in single-ruled border, 16mo (6 inches in height x 4 3/4 inches in width), pp. 16. Several black and white illustrations. GOOD condition with mild shelf and handling wear. First edition uncommon in trade or institutional holdings, with a 2024 OCLC search returning Harvard and University of New Hampshire only. Protected now in a clear display sleeve with white card-stock backing board.

Removed from a bound volume, octavo, pp. 25. Two contemporary owner names, one crossed out, near top edge of half-title page. Nick with no loss at bottom-edge of half title (Photo 2). Short tear with no loss, mid fore-edge of title page (Photo 3 is title page verso). Small tear at top of page 15 (Photo 6). Some faint old bumping to page tips (Photo 7). Several small faint spots of foxing at page 25 and on rear panel (Photo 8). Withal, GOOD and clean and protected now from further wear in a clear display sleeve with white cardstock backing board.

Publisher's stapled color-illustrated card stock wrappers, 12mo, pp. 64 of black and white photo illustrations from the White Mountains in NH. Some edge wear and shelf rubs. Staples are rusty. Several small white abrasions on the centerpiece illustration (see photo 4 for our best attempt at a close-up). GOOD and sound withal. This item may have been issued with a matching box in 1950, but there is no box included here.

Very good octavo, pp. 52 in the publisher's illustrated stapled wrappers. Housed in a clear protective display sleeve with white cardstock backing board.
